A more cynical person might think it was done intentionally so by the NCAA because they obviously hate the whole thing and want public opinion to shift against it. It’s literally about the dumbest possible time they could pick on the calendar. I was thinking about the portal and the timing... what if it's about parity? The better schools are still playing in the tournament, and the coaching staffs will be more focused on the tournament games ahead of them... but the coaches at the schools who didn't make the dance or that are already eliminated will be able to more fully focus on the portal... this would make more sense for the pro level, though, as their players would be able to play as long as they were able, as opposed to the limited 4-5 year playing period for college kids. Or, maybe it's a push towards the GM model - coaches be coaching, and the GMs can be working the portal and making contact with players. Or, maybe you're right. :D TheBigLebowski and Chris007 2 Quote

He always says something that I think most of us know and have been saying for years. You build a team, not just a collection of talent. I really think that has been the problem with IU basketball for awhile now, we get/have talented players, they just don't mesh together as a team so well. Another thing he stresses is the locker room. He says sometimes it is tempting to get a player with talent even though he doesn't really fit and might be bad for the locker room. He is willing to pass on certain guys no matter how talented if they pose a threat to the locker room....I love that! The collection of players vs a team is a by-product of Woodson's laissez-faire approach to recruiting. Just get a pile of money and go rent the 4- and 5-stars regardless of how the pieces fit. He may have gotten the positions covered (guards, forwards, centers), but no clue if they would mesh... thus the "still getting to know one another" comments throughout the past 4 years. Hoosier82 Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Has there been any concrete info of a GM role being established? Quote

I remember the Crean hire and some in the Marquette fan base basically thanking IU for pulling Crean away. I have an even more personal story that aligns with this on the very day he was announced: a buddy of mine from undergrad grew up in Wisconsin and was a HUGE Marquette guy. Entire family went there and his uncle played ball there. Got a call from him the second it hit the wires with hysterical laughter and a comment that basically everyone wanted him fired anyway. And an ominous: good luck.....lol Silat Player, cybergates and theriverpilot 1 2 Quote

There was a method behind that: The university was burned when it hired Archie Miller in 2017, then perceived to be a promising young coach, only for Miller to flop in Bloomington after four years without an NCAA Tournament appearance. Decker’s number crunching picked up on the fact that Miller had more or less sustained success at Dayton, rather than built it — Brian Gregory won 97 games in his final four seasons coaching the Flyers, before handing off to Miller, who won 90 in his first four years there. DeVries compared favorably in that analysis. Drake had won just 40 games in the four years before he arrived, compared to 95 in his first four years. His work at West Virginia covered a smaller sample size but showed similar results. In his first season in Morgantown, DeVries’ team won 10 more games than in the previous season — it was the largest single-season turnaround in program history — six more in Big 12 play, and the Mountaineers showed demonstrable improvement in defensive metrics in particular. theriverpilot, BGleas, HoosierSadaseci and 5 others 6 2 Quote

WVU is a place that someone can be for a long time and be comfortable if you can win there, but if a Kansas, IU, UNC, or Duke calls you and asks if you are interested, you take the call and listen. The Kiffen to USC is a pretty much spot on comparison. My ex is from Tennessee and her family was PO'ed that Kiffen left, but I understood seeing it was his dream job. In hindsight, he probably screwed up, but when that opportunity presents itself, you have to take that chance. I am glad we were on the side we are on. OliviaPope40 and HoosierSadaseci 2 Quote

I believe when is all said and done we will be a preseason top 25 team:) Obviously then you gotta perform i think he will. 1. How many players does everyone think we need in the portal? 2. How many high school recruits does everyone think we bring in? 3. Who does everyone think that Coach D-Rock keeps from the current team? Quote

I get what he’s saying here but had to look it up. Archie had a higher winning percentage than both Gregory or Grant though not by a lot. Quote

JustWinBaby Posted March 20 Posted March 20 39 minutes ago, RoadRage said: I'll throw CDV out there...... CDV is my vote. Rolls off the tongue way better if you sound out CDD vs CDV. Also looks better visually, and IMO gets the point across more effectively since the V in his name is unique (not a lot of V names out there) and identifiable, and as mentioned before, the V in his last name is actually the first letter of a noun (the "De" just means of/from, "Vries" is a proper noun placename). In Dutch the "de" would not be capitalized -- his name would be stylized "Darian de Vries" for instance. CDD will always annoy me and I'll never use it. I'd rather just type out his last name personally. But that's just me. CSP, OliviaPope40 and RoadRage 2 1 Quote
