Did you catch the “blow by” from the WIU coach with Coach Cignetti at the end? It definitely seemed cold…

Yeah I saw that. Not sure what he wanted Cig to do differently? I thought he called things as respectively as possible.

I didn't see it, I was reporting at my high school game.  But when your school got blown out and has lost 26 games straight, you aren't likely gonna be civil.

…that’s not our problem. Lol I don’t feel sorry for him or the team one bit.

…besides he walked out of Memorial Stadium with $450k for his school for playing IU.

I would say there is very little chance we ever play them again......

Partially because of last night and partially because the school itself is hanging on for dear life.

We can discredit the competition all we want, but this is a much better team than we had last year. They showed discipline and poise. No stupid drive killing penalties or acting like a fool. I'm not sure last year's team could have scored 77 points against a high school team.

I agree. Last year, this was probably more like 38-17 win.

This very true. My grandson was on the team on scholarship for one year. They suspended classes in the spring semester because they couldn't afford to pay the professors. He left school after that and joined the Navy.

I remember that. What a disaster. On a football level, around that same time, they were forced to start offering partial scholarships and that was pretty much the death blow to the program, especially being in the Missouri Valley at the time.

They wanted to do that to my grandson. He had a knee injury that they wanted him to play through so he decided to do something else. I think he could have been pretty good for them, he made the north/south all-star team, but in the end it was an unpleasant experience.

Wonder if WIU's plunge into mediocrity is a recent thing?

I lived in beautiful Duluth, Minnesota, for several years. Right before I left, UMD got a new football coach -- Bob Nielson. He ended up taking them to the D-II playoffs six times and won two NCAA titles. He was 100-26 there -- which, by my calculations, is pretty damn good.

From there, he went to WIU -- but was only there three years (2013-15). He left there with a losing record, but did get them to the FCS playoffs in his last year. He's now at South Dakota.

WIU must've taken football serioiusly at one point, because I don't think you'd leave a D-II power for a really crappy FCS program.

They were a perennial, mediocre .500ish program with occasional outliers since at least the turn of the century and then as the FCS-level directional Illinois schools started to struggle institutionally around 2016-17 they really cratered and it’s only gotten worse there while SIU and EIU seem to have kinda figured things out. The school just completely stopped supporting that program.
