Perkins seems like a guy who if we had him last year we would have been better.  If we add him, and assume he, MR, MM, Gallo improve this offseason then we should be much better.  Land a shooting specialist or 2 and we can be really good. However, I still share the goal Woodson set and that was to compete for BT and national titles.  We will either a ton of year on year improvement from many or some incredible additions to meet those goals

? That's a Woodson problem, not a Perkins problem.

I already know we have a Woodson problem. The question is really how is it best mitigated.

2022-23:  178th in three pointers per field goal attempt

2021-22:  135th in three pointers per field goal attempt

2020-21:  108th in three pointers per field goal attempt.

Pace is irrelevant to the conversation -- a team that shoots 20 threes when each team has 70 possession doesn't have the three pointer as much of a factor as a team that takes 20 threes on 60 offensive possessions.  Each individual three point shot has a bigger bearing on the outcome in a lower possession game than it does in a higher possession game.

Pace is never irrelevant to the discussion of a pg, especially one that is athletic but poor shooting.

...... Could just be a VA connection between him and XJ. Or something else.

Well he certainly can make tough contested 3's and he certainly makes some shots more difficult than necessary. Highlight videos suck imo. Can he defend in any way? How would he do going from D2 to B1G?

Thank you for this.  Just got back and commented as well.  They have been top 20 in attempts and makes and percentage before.

Under McCaffery (and I'm even removing pace, just go with raw numbers)

  • 2023-4:  296th in attempts, 258th in makes, 120th in percent
  • 2022-3:  91st in attempts, 105th in makes, 186th in percent
  • 2021-2:  51st in attempts, 29th in makes, 51st in percent
  • 2020-1:  52nd in attempts, 17th in makes, 11th in percent
  • 2019-20:  130th in attempts, 112th in makes, 103rd in percent
  • 2018-19:  176th in attempts, 129th in makes, 76th in percent
  • 2017-18:  234th in attempts, 171st in makes, 59th in percent
  • 2016-17:  85th in attempts, 55th in makes, 55th in percent
  • 2015-16:  116th in attempts, 70th in makes, 48th in percent
  • 2014-15:  249th in attempts, 242nd in makes, 213th in percent
  • 2013-14:  243rd in attempts, 216th in makes, 150th in percent
  • 2012-13:  184th in attempts, 259th in makes, 305th in percent
  • 2011-12:  277th in attempts, 212th in makes, 53rd in percent
  • 2010-11:  297th in attempts, 312th in makes, 291st in percent

So they've never been top 20 attempts in McCaffery's 14 years despite the fact that they play at an accelerated pace.  They've only been top 20 in makes once (in fact, only top 50 two times) despite the fast pace -- it should be noted that while they were 17th in three point shots taken that year, they were 15th in total shots take.  And in terms of three point percentage, they've been top 20 once in fifteen years.

Perkins has played with Iowa for four years but his freshman year (2020-21) he played 146 minutes.....he was an end of the bench player then who registered 10 DNPs.  So in the three years he's been a starter or part time starter (his sophomore year), Iowa has been 51, 91, and 296 in three point attempts and 29, 105, and 258 in makes.  Iowa is not a three point shooting team that people make them out to be.  Exactly 4 times in 15 years has Iowa been in the top 100 in three point makes despite pushing tempo.

I meant to say that pace IS relevant to the discussion of # of three point shots taken -- the rest of my quote that follows that in my post talks about that.  Iowa took more shots than any team in the Big Ten (63.4) yet was 12th in number of three point shots taken per game (18.9).

One of the biggest items that is important is Galloway's shooting.  He does some things very well -- he does a good job driving the ball, he distributes well -- but it wasn't a secret that his perimeter and free throw game hit a huge mental block this past season.

I don't think he's the three point shooter he showed in 2022-23, but I also don't think he's as bad as he was last season.  Combined, he has been 56 of 165 over the last two years -- 34%.  I think he'll be around that mark next year.

lol.  Let’s hope it’s because a different target has emerged.

Woodson isn’t done at Indiana until we are the laughingstock of the conference.  Is that what we are already?

It's good we decided to not be in the NIT to focus on nothing. If the iu portal tracker is accurate then Indiana will be a mid major team next year

Assume he is headed to NC State.  Visiting there now.

Not sure of the timing, but did Reneau and Mgbako announce they were coming back before or after he said he was visiting?  I am positive that MM said so afterwards, not sure about Reneau.

Also, I am of the opinion that its a blessing in disguise.  I can't imagine playing Reneau and Huntley together.  Way too similar.
