The Case for TBD

Recommended Posts

This is just a placeholder for next flavor of the month which we'll probably find out about next month.

Last March and early this season it was May many people were calling for. That has died down a bit and now it's Schertz. Let's not forget that before them it was Michael Lewis. Before him it was someone else. Next month it'll probably be someone new.

Both have solid resumes at their respective levels but both are risks.

I just want to say that I completely hate this hire in advance (or, if TBD does exceptionally well, I won't let you forget that I wanted TBD from the very beginning).

It's wild so many want to "tout themselves" with.... "I was never on board with the Woodson hire in the first place".....

yeah but you probably didn't even play HS basketball lol ....eeeesh

Who are possibilities for Coach TBD? With May going to Michigan, Schertz probably starting a new job, and Pearl getting older and more unlikely, it's time to identify our flavor of the month to yearn for when Woodson is finally gone.

I find Amir Abdur-Rahim intriguing.

Bryce Drew failed spectacularly at Vanderbilt but has done well at Grand Canyon. Has he learned and improved or is he like Alford and just good at mid-majors?

Have to think Shrewsberry is in that next batch of flavor of the month, especially if he's able to land Sisley and/or Mullins this Fall. His raw W-L record is nothing to fawn over but I think there's a ton to like about his background, pedigree, and connections. If Notre Dame pushes for a tourney bid this year I could be sold.

Good background but his record has been terrible and he hasn't been anywhere long enough to really get an idea of what he'd be like long term. I just don't get it.

He's taken two bottom of the barrel P5 jobs and lead one of those schools to the tournament in year 2. Dude has been around every level of basketball and coached under guys like Painter and Stevens. Has deep recruiting connections to the state of Indiana.

X's and O's are the least of my concern with a guy like Shrews. Shrews leading a team playing almost all true freshman and sophomores to a KenPom defensive rating of 30 is a pretty remarkable feat. Put this guy in a situation where he isn't trying to compete against a top tier football program and you might have something.

It's going to be somebody young and someone we're probably unfamiliar with. Everybody that would be considered "homerun hires" are either old and close to retiring, not coming back to coach in college, or comfortable where they are.

As far as TBD goes: there is a process at work -- and I think there are too many people here who think this should be a linear journey, with a rigid, proscribed set of waypoints leading, without exception, to a logical and predictable conculsion.

I caution everyone to not conflate an explanation with a defense -- which many mistakenly do.

I think Shrews and Abdur-Rahim are the list for me at this point. Next season will be telling for both.

I used to (recently even) think the IU job was one of the greatest basketball jobs in America. I no longer think so lol. I think it's just a high paying gig like all the rest now.
