From what I’ve heard from someone who’s close, the retirement agreement is in preparation ATM. So it’s a matter of when the announcement is made.

If it’s that far along, gotta think it’s before Saturday. Maybe that’s me in Hopium but why let him coach Saturday if it’s all but a done deal

On the other hand, if IU is really interested in May, maybe you DON'T want to announce before Saturday. Announcing officially that the position is open before May comes to play in Bloomington is going to make things much more difficult for Dusty, as he will spend every pregame interview having to talk about the open IU position.

When is the pre game press conference?  Friday?  Good time to announce his intent to retire at season’s end.

I think that's one possibility.

I think another possibility is that ~2 hours before tip off, a 1 pager gets sent to media and they break the story.

Woody briefly talks about it in a pre-game interview, says he wants to focus on the game/finishing the season strong, and there's some special video tribute in the stadium / on TV to elicit cheers. Then it doesn't have to be the sole focus of the post-game media because they'll have the whole Michigan game to talk about too.

Wouldn’t matter if we already have someone else lined up.

At this point if Woodson is not fired before the Michigan game then the administration need to reevaluate themselves. PR nightmare waiting to happen.

And it puts a top candidate in a very awkward position

How great would it be to get a truly program changing, transformational hire?

Imagine the buzz around the program with the headline "Hoosiers land Celtics' Stevens with massive 7 year, $70M deal".

Lots of great candidates out there compared to 4 years ago. But man, this would be on a different level.

"Hoosiers land Celtics' Stevens" is a headline that sends shockwaves through the sport. That would turn heads.

Shockwaves, not to be confused with the tremors from people falling down and laughing at the Woodson hire.

It's surprising how many think that IU will have the next coach lined up when it's announced that Woodson will not be the coach next year. I very much doubt that they will. If it's not Stevens, everyone else will be busy coaching with games left in the season. Don't they need permission from the schools to interview the coach? They might have something tentative in place, but I don't see them doing formal negotiations and job offer while Woodson is still publicly the coach. Can you imagine if that leaked? It would look terrible both for IU and the guy agreeing to a job while coaching in-season at another school.

We've been through plenty of coaching changes and have seen at plenty of other schools to know how it goes. They're not going to say, "Woodson is retiring at the end of the year at which point X will take over as IU's Head Coach of the future."

Even speculation about the IU job being open at the end of the year will likely result in questions for several coaches, especially May.

"Why is Woodson still coaching?"

"How does Woodson still have a job?"

Those are the types of questions Dolson & Co have been wanting the media to fixate on while they find the next guy. For the sake of minimizing distractions and getting the deal done, he's protecting himself and the successor by not protecting Woodson.

Good points, but I don’t think they apply to Stevens.  I’m guessing he wanted to get past trade deadline.

by guessing - I obviously mean hoping and praying.
