Alford would probably have crean type success. But with nil who knows crean and alford could have done pretty well at iu. Woodson still stinks with top level nil money

I think both would be better at IU now than what Crean was.  I don’t know this, they both are and would be better coaches than MW and it isn’t even close.

I don’t really care if IU can hook an elite coach as long as the next coach has spent his whole career grinding in the college basketball ranks I will be fine with whoever they chose

We’ll mark you down as a “no” on Brad Steven’s…lol.

The obvious place to look for a college coach is the college ranks. But I suspect you could pull a good coach from elsewhere and succeed, especially in the nil era where being an elite recruiter may not be an absolute necessity anymore. Woodys problem isn’t that he coached in the pros but instead that he isn’t a good coach.

Are people really still trying to say they were correct in the Archie Miller hire?  Jeez...once you realize that you were wrong you can begin to grow.  Archie was a terrible hire at the time.  How on the world didn't you see that?  Internalize it and grow from it.  He was a terrible hire

You don’t really interview for these jobs.

I have a hard time believing there isn't some sort of face to face evaluation to see if someone is a fit. Especially for someone moving up from a mid-major.

Are you saying they just select who they want as a coach then say, "hey, do you want this job? Here's our offer."

Crean and Alford with IUs NIL would do just enough to maybe never get fired but also likely never enough to satisfy anyone.

Be thankful for Woodson’s ineptitude.

It seems to vary. I’m sure some do at some level. But at the class of Indiana and the like  you’re usually poaching known quantities. The problem with asking a guy to interview is that someone else might not ask them to. Look at Dusty May last year. He was interviewing schools, not having schools interviewing him. There’s simply more openings than hot coaches to have very much leverage.

I agree with you about Archie though. He was such a poor fit it seems like somebody should’ve caught that whether or not they had a sit down formal interview.

As I said before he wasn’t my first choice, but he was the hottest young coach in college basketball. It was universally thought to be a great hire. Saying otherwise is revisionist history. He was wanted all over high major basketball.

hindsight says yes, bad hire, in the moment, it absolutely was a good hire.

I don't ever recall seeing his name near the top of the iu coaching boards online. The hire honestly surprised me. It had been 3 years since he made the elite 8 and he had been bounced two straight years in the first round. Too me a hot coach is somebody like may who had just made a final four. Archie was ok but it certainly did not excite me. I'm guessing his last name made him a hotter commodity than he should have been

Just curious why he was a bad hire at the time?  On paper, he checked a lot of boxes imo.

in the end, it obviously didn’t work out.  The iu job was not a good fit whatsoever for his personality (amongst other things).  But at the time of the hire, I admittedly thought he was a good hire based on his previous success.

Literally everyone in the college basketball world loved the hire. You would be hard pressed to find someone that wrote IU made a terrible hire at the time.    As we know swing and a miss however at the time it was hailed as a home run hire.    Years after the fact yep it was a terrible hire but at the time IU was praised by anyone in college basketball with a platform.

The vast majority of people on the board were in favor of the hire. And as USPS pointed out, the national media loved it.

I was 100% on the Archie train, he was impressive and consistent at Dayton. The year after his elite 8 year, they didn’t have a guy over 6’6 and they made the tournament and won a few games.
