I am not advocating for him but if we had to go the IU guy route, the only pick that wouldn't have been borderline suicidal for the program was Alford.  He is the only guy who has been fairly successful at being a D1 college coach in the "IU guy" tree.  

You don't hand the keys to this job to Fife, Lewis, or Woodson.  Not for what was needing done at the time.  Alford probably wasn't a great pick at the time either, but for the time, he was the ONLY "IU guy" that should have been part of the discussion.  The old heads picked Woodson but I think in the past when players talked about getting an IU guy, it was Alford they had in mind.

And before I get the "OMG he is awful, no way..." posts, I am saying he was the best option out of the very limited pool of "IU guy" because he was the most known and does have P5 experience and accomplishments he could point to as a head coach.  That being said, I think the "IU guy" was a panic hire and we should have reevaluated after choice #1 turned us down.  The "IU guy" coaching tree was pretty thin.  It still mostly is except you have another guy you could put up there with Alford as maybe being a realistic (if not quite proven) option.

Went to the NFL Combine yesterday. On the way back, we stopped at Mother Bear's. As I sit down I see the big TV at the Bar has the Auburn game on..wasn't like it was on CBS or big ESPN. I think that's a sign folks..

It is a bit funny, in retrospect. I remember before the season, and early in the season, people were looking at the polls and complaining the people who voted in those polls were not giving IU enough "respect". Even to the point of calling the pollsters names and claiming a vendetta against IU, or at least that the pollsters were idiots and how we would show them to be idiots.

My how things have changed.

haha I got a good laugh out of it when I sat down. Just sad...Watched a lot of games last night (Michigan State-Purdue, Houston-Oklahoma, Tennessee-Bama..even Arkansas-Kentucky)...they're playing a different game than IU.

In other words, you likely get Pearl to come in and rebuild the program for a couple years, have a couple good years, and then either are looking to move on from him or have him build your succession plan.

 

It’s not the worst plan by any means. I don’t think it’s entirely clear to me you pass up taking a chance on a guy who you think could be great for 20 years. That is, of course, if you’re convinced such a person exists and isn’t just the next flavor of the year. 

Great post. Though I think Oearl can make a final four and possibly a national title in 6 years or less. So even if he is a bridge he would have the program ripe for another great coach to take over after he is done. There is no reason to take chances on modmajor coaches who may or may not work out. Say we have Pearl for 6 years and have a final four and the foundation is set. Then you go get Nate Oats who will still be in his 50’s for a decade. If a Brad Stevens type presents himself then great go get him. But even Stevens was proven by national title games/final fours etc.

Exactly!  Pearl can right the ship and make the job more appealing after he leaves, that to me is the goal.  I don’t think we can afford to take a chance on the Flavor of the Month coach at this point and time.  Once Pearl rights the ship, then we can see if what May does is sustainable and then we can make that move or get someone like Oats.  But this to me makes the most sense
