They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

7 games left. I think 5-2 would be a nice expectation.  I think unless we go 7-0 and win a couple of B1G games the tourney is out of the question. So it’s basically out the the question.  If we limp to a 2-5 or 3-4 finish the heat will get intense.  I think the staff thinks they can finish 5-2 or better and lessen the narrative.

I think

  • 2-5 or worse will significantly ramp up the "Fire" narrative,
  • 5-2 or better will significantly eliminate the "Fire" narrative,
  • 3-4 or 4-3 will give Woody some real pause for returning and may prompt "Retire," but won't set his seat on fire.

That was kinda my thoughts on extrapolating it out too. That’s why I thought it was important to state.  The staff still says a lot of the season left. And there is in some ways but when tourney hopes are dashed the season is over for many.

Article when Woodson was fired from the Hawks...

https://www.espn.com/nba/news/story?id=5188712

Woodson felt he deserved a chance to return after the Hawks became just the seventh team in NBA history to win more games than the previous season for five straight years.

But it was clear that some players had tuned him out, especially in the playoffs. Atlanta struggled to beat a short-handed Milwaukee team in the opening round, rallying from a 3-2 deficit to win in seven games. Then came a total rout in the conference semifinals.

That article included this gem... does it sound familiar to anyone?

Woodson worked as an assistant for Brown in Detroit before landing his first head coaching job with the Hawks. He came to Atlanta preaching hard-nosed defense, but some complained that he lacked imagination on the offensive end, even as the team kept adding talented players and improving every season.

He needs to bring in an assistant to revamp the offense. Unfortunately that would require him to admit he isn't getting it done, and also would require him to listen to someone who isn't part of his entourage.

The problem with saying you have to earn your spot is once you get that spot, you will never lose it because Woodson sticks with the same starting lineup every game. The guy refuses to change anything

This is my biggest beef and why I'm all in on May.  Look when I was at UNC I observed Roy Williams and Coach K I would say that Roy wasn't the smartest guy in the room X's and O's wise but he knew that he had to adjust things when his plans weren't working and he wasn't afraid to ask for advice and help.  Coach K would let his assistants yell at him in the locker room to get the victory.  I love Woodson as a New York Knicks fan, but I get the sense that he's playing the " I know more than you because I coached in the NBA" card and quite frankly doesn't want to put in the work in college.

If May is simply willing to adjust. We will have success at IU again.  The recruits will come because of our resources.  It's really that simple people.  The IU administration infuriates me because they simply don't think about how people gel and ignore personal attributes. I feel like we got lucky with Coach Moran and I think coach Cig was the obvious choice, but coincidently he's actually going to fit well personality wise.... but that's it.

Coach Mike Woodson's dumpster fire... the gift that just keeps giving...
Keeping Woodson is going to haunt us for the next 4-5 years at least.
Hardly a surprise. Look at how purdue just carved us up. Must be nice to have buddies like quinn.

The article on Dusty May was pretty eye opening on how much different he really is than Archie and Woodson. Had they not got beat on that buzzer beater we wouldn't be considering him "risky"...

Woodson 100% gives off that vibe. He has an unearned arrogance when it comes to college coaching. You see it in his interactions with the media. It’s all “I’m Mike Woodson and you’re not. I know what I’m doing.”

"I'm not going to answer that to you or the fans"

But sure, that sounds like a person that will learn and change. The same guy that was fired from the Hawks because players tuned him out.

Never said it wasn’t a roster failure. Not one time. My biggest issue is the extra 25 things we cook up to be big mad about. People do learn. All coaches do.

Yeah, but you don't hire a 62 year old professional coach to "learn".  You hire Dusty May and Archie Miller to do that.

Nothing about him suggests that he, at 66 years old, will suddenly have an entire personality switch and be open to change. Yet that’s being pushed as a reason to keep him lol. Those posters may hope he changes, but there’s no reason to believe that he will.

I’m telling you Dusty has had more years to build something, in a crappy conference and he isn’t ready for this level. That if you think Woodson has failed, lord help May when he can’t get the level of talent many of you think he will be able to. Talent matters more in the bigger conferences and pure X/Os is not enough.  He would be able to over a few years but it would be a slow climb and not something his coaching acumen can make up for. I mean, the guy has 4 terrible losses this year. You can say by small margin but you also chose to ignore his slight victories. One would think a coaching savant wouldn’t lose those games. Brad Stevens wouldn’t have.

To @rcs29 - yes, the IU job is harder. When everyone still expects RMK level results or in some cases, even better. By year 3 or 4. Say you don’t? First year not making the tourney and guy is worst coach to ever live. Get him out. Would be same with May. Rinse and repeat.

At end of the day, there are better options than him and waiting for them is the smarter choice. Too many of you argue in absolutes. Woody may not be the guy but no need to rush into this. This idea of “wasting a year” doesn’t matter if you get it wrong again.

Who are these "better options" and why do we have to wait for them?

EVERY SINGLE YEAR there are great choices and terrible choices available for a Power 5 coaching opening.

In order,

The RIGHT way to do this is:

  1. When the time comes
  2. A great evaluation process
  3. That identifies a particular coach

NOT

  1. Identifying a particular coach
  2. At the time that coach is available
  3. Through an evaluation process

Different sport, but the Cubs won a world series by doing it the "Not" way.  And they had just hired a new guy who they gave the boot.  All because the "right" guy became available.

It is over.  The only reason to play in the NIT is to get guys minutes for next year and hope to build off that.  We are talking about running off over half the team so any development in the NIT isn't going to be realized by this program.  We also see how those NIT appearances turn out for us, nobody wants to play in it and it shows.

Additionally, the last NIT "bracket" I saw had us outside looking in.  3 and 4 is not likely to get us in and finding 4+ wins in the next 7 doesn't appear at all likely to me.
