Honestly, I haven't let myself get that close to thinking about it again. When we checked in with him after last season the time wasn't right but since they won the NBA championship who knows.

I think they do care but completely misunderstood how much effort it takes.  I think they felt Woody could attract talent based on his experience and grandfatherly way, which he has to some extent, but did not realize how much time was needed on the HS recruiting side of things.  I also think they overlooked how you have to be a very good coach to excel.

This is not an easy job.  There are some really good coaches out there who can build a program, have resources and are great at Xs and Os.  Woody just does not seem to have the stamina or acumen to excel here.

I was on that board until a few years ago and I don't miss it. That describes multiple posters on there. The first one that comes to mind is Cavanagh but from what I remember he's way more combative than this poster.

Last evening, I listed our last half dozen Athletic Directors. Most of them had never been ADs when we hired them. When I talk about consensus building and relationships and you talk about the seriousness of our administration, go back to that list. Most of them weren’t / aren’t bad people, but IU has always been an extremely provincial culture, and that includes the athletic department. Decision making has been a team sport there for quite some time. It’s a big reason why Bob Knight demanded that he have full control of the basketball program during his tenure, and why he began to bristle when anyone tried to insert themselves. John Ryan, Bill Orwig and Ralph Floyd got it and were very respectful of that, which led to Knight respecting them. That began to change when those guys left.

That wasn’t my understanding (signed contract) but I was told directly that Mrs. Stevens was a challenge, to say the least. We also had several cooks in the kitchen, each of whom thought they had the code cracked on what it would take to get Stevens. In the end, I don’t think the code really existed.

I doubt she was that challenging.  We just don’t know what we’re doing, so she appears challenging.

Well, my understanding was that we agreed to terms, wrote them up, she took the agreement on a plane from Florida to Boston made a few calls on the plane. Brad got outvoted by his family about leaving Boston but a short time later after the NBA season ended, Ainge retired and Brad became general manager. 

There were way too many people at the house when all of this was being discussed in Florida.

It wasn’t my understanding that there was ever an agreement. We definitely made a written proposal, or at least the broad provisions of one, but it was always a moving target and nobody on the IU side ever felt like he / they were going to say yes. We also had several people on our side who thought they knew how to close the deal, and they were more talk than action.

Yeah, I don't think that's how most (competently run) universities would handle a negotiation of that sort.

He’s not done coaching
