Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Vanderbilt has many of the same academic restrictions that ND and some of the Ivies have. Not the easiest job to recruit SEC quality athletes to

But didn’t he recruit pretty well at Vandy?  I know he got one we were after and I thought he had a couple more in that class.

We should probably just hire James Madison coach and make it two from that university. I really like their style.

Could you imagine the JMU fan reactions if we did that?  Some were very salty about Cigs coming here which I kind of get but if they lost both to us they might invade.

That would be awesome!

I finally realized what Woodson actually meant when he said he was here to "compete for championships" - he meant make it into a tournament where "championships" are decided.  The 1st round of the NCAATand B10T is, to him, doing his job.  Now he and staff have "not too much" work to do to ensure they make it into the expanded B10 tournament next year.  Then he'll figure he's still performing satisfactorily.

If he meant actually seriously contending for champions, he's failed spectacularly.

This infuriates me.

Why, just why, can't we have an administration with some damn balls? Mike Woodson never deserved this job. I don't care what Archie Miller was given or what the optics are if we fire him now. Archie at least coached in the college arena with some success. All the coaches we could get are going to go elsewhere leaving IU even further behind. All in the name of optics. I'd argue the optics are worse if we keep Mike Woodson. Why can the admin not see this? If the inbreds in Lexington can figure it out, we can too.

If that actually happens, it will be a great example of what serious basketball school looks like. Assuming there is not some sort of negotiation and they straight up fire him, that would be the second largest NCAA coaching buyout in college football history. It is a staggering amount to move on from a basketball coach, much less one with his history at the school. And you can bet the farm they would throw some HUGE contracts at the usual suspects. Like nine figures-- and I don't care what anyone says about "not coaching" anymore or staying put, you start putting Alabama football HC numbers around, people are going to listen. Kentucky opening after the success Cal has had would be an absolute market resetting nightmare.

I never wanted to admit we aren't a serious program to myself but there's no other conclusion.

Get ready for more losses to Penn State and freaking Nebraska

Just look at the contrast in the school coomercials shown on B10 broadcasts.  The other schools show laboratories, while we show fat kids wandering around the campus.

Seen Kentucky fans arguing on Twitter about keeping Calipari or not. Some say anybody can win at Kentucky. Others point out Gillespie couldn't and reference the fact from 99-until 2011 they didn't make a final four....

A 12 year stretch? Practically double that and I wonder how they'd be feeling. I'm resigned to the fact he's getting another year but man the unserious nature of our program is deflating when you're watching March Madness without the Hoosiers mens team. Love rooting for our ladies though.

Since he's here I'm hoping we "hit a grand slam" (eye roll) in the portal and they surprise me next year. That said, fire / retire Mike Woodson. Good grief.

The sad thing (for us) is that after 1999 and before 2011, they made 10 of 11 tournaments, won 5 conference championships, 4 conference tournaments, made 5 sweet 16s, and 3 elite 8s.

Imagine what they’d do after the last 12 years we’ve had if they view their 2000-2010 as a bad period.

I don't think they'll fire him unless they can get an Oats or a Drew which appears unlikely.  But they're considering it which says a lot with a $35M buyout.

Winning > “holier than thou”
Business > Friendship/Relationships

Can you guess what school we are?

I don’t think they are working hard to trash the program. In fact, had Woodson hit with DQ, LM and Boogie I think the board sentiment would be much different. But he did not hit. I think it just shows that the vision/expectations he had for recruiting missed in a big way and will probably sink him. But to suggest he is trying to sink it seems to be a stretch.

If wishes and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a merry Christmas. Fland was always going to Kentucky. Queen was always going to Maryland. We had Liam until he saw what a train wreck Woodson’s team is, and he bailed.

Woodson may not be actively trying to tank the program, but he’s clearly too lazy and too full of himself to to anything else. And Buckner is standing guard over his boy protecting his “legacy”.

Must be nice to have an administration that wants to win and is supportive of its AD.

In their case, they should be careful what they wish for.  There is no sure thing out there anymore.  I don't see a dominant mid aged coach out there right now and the whole portal thing has made it much easier for the other bigger schools to correct issues.

I hope they move on from Calipari because they are just as likely to end up in a churn and burn period like we have been as they are to pick someone that is making a Final Four run every few years.

Looked at the rosters for his 3 Vanderbilt teams and the only name I recognize is Darius Garland

No they’re are not.

There are no sure things. And there never was. Bob Knight wasn’t.  Pitino wasn’t. Tubby wasn’t. Gillispie wasn’t. Cal was probably as close as it gets and now he’s down.

But they are typically pretty quick to recognize when it’s going south and pull the trigger. They also do a decent job getting quality candidates. That’s what most big time programs do and all you can ask for. They won’t go 25 years of mediocrity because it’s nearly impossible for any competent major program to do so. And they have proven themselves competent.

They'd be insanely stupid to move on unless they have Beard, Lloyd or Wright coming out of retirement.

Shitu was a McDonalds all American as well and Neismith plays for the Pacers.  Even with Garland getting hurt they should have at least won a game in the SEC but went 0-18.    They had Drew micd up for a inside the huddle and it was possibly one of the worst I’ve ever listened to
