It was definitely a disappointing loss, given the big leads through the first half and first half of the second half. Zebras screwed us a time or two, but if we're going to ever be taken seriously, even amongst ourselves, we have to stop crying about the refs. The game gets called how it gets called and the key is making adjustments to that dynamic.

Galloway played his heart out. Props for that. Hopefully whatever was troubling him is now behind him. Cupps line was less that I expected, but he played a solid game against some tough competition ... and he's only 10 games removed from high school. Still not impressed with either Gunn or Banks. Good to see Mbako's game coming along. Ware is solid and did ok against Dickinson. Not a "moral victory" post, but there is a lot of positives to take away from this one... IU needs to find a way to close out a game with the W. Hopefully Woody can get it done.

And we're still 2-0 in the B1G...

Exactly, that means we have a chance to go 20-0 in the B10!

I guess I may never get to the point of iu losing at assembly hall and finding positives. I remember when we went into a big game like that and expected to win and it was devastating not to. I am not attacking or blaming the positive posts in this thread! I like reading them and enjoy the point of view. It does show me how far we have fallen and how far we have to go.
If purdue loses to Zona I don't think many of their fans will try to find positives in the game. That's the difference of where our programs are and it is devastating to me. When you get to a certain level winning becomes the expectation and we need to get there. I believe we are farther from that than many fans think.

Correct. If Woodson really does expect to win big ten titles you have win these games at home when up 13. You gotta close it out.

That egg headed Ref is the mother of all goons.

I want going to ref-post again, but since you brought it up…

The last 3 fouls on Galloway were BS.

1) the drive and 3pt play where he got all ball from behind

2) the blockout foul on the made 3 that gave them possession. While maybe technically a foul, this play happens 20x a game and is hardly ever called. it’s a pure judgement call.  To call it in a tight game after a made 3 gifting them another possession is a travesty.

3) i covered the dickenson moving screen in another post.

Having those 3 fouls foul out our senior guard at home during a career game is a tough one. It’s probably good The General is gone, because he’d probably be looking for those refs in the parking lot if he were still around. Brutal.

As disappointing as the result was, and of course that is all that matters, we know we can play with the top teams, at least at home. I expected a rough November and December. XJ was expected to anchor our backcourt but he is injured and here we are. Time to get ready for a long, difficult, and physical B1G season. And unbelievably, the sun came out on the north side of Indianapolis this afternoon.

Well, we have 10 new players who are all trying to build chemistry and each one finding their roles and it is a very young team, especially with X out!  With that in mind, this team took a step forward with their chemistry and roles today.  That will finally lead to close game wins!

lastly, we lost our defensive intensity down the stretch because Woodson was forced to play Galloway and Cupps the entire 2nd half and our lack of depth at the guard position cost us this one.

Well if you looked at the prediction threads and saw what most predicted the score would be this was a lot t better than expected.

I hate losing as well and have seen IU at its best but that isn't where the program is right now.  Our expectations for this season shouldn't be what it was 30 years ago.

This game doesn't effect us winning big ten titles

I enetered this phase somewhere between the end of Mike Davis and the end of Crean. It’s hard to pinpoint when. I could hardly stand to watch the Archie era.

We’re 25 years removed from anything resembling a great program.

What's wrong with my math?

Ware, Mgbako, and Reneau were all 5 stars and are in our starting lineup.

Reneau was listed as a 4*, but I guess it depends on where you look  -- so 4.5.  But like, I said I don't put much weight on "stars" for an 18 year old.

I know there were several comments about the refs and I thought there were several fouls that we got all ball and the out of bounds on Ware play amongst a few other questionable calls, but I think Assembly Hall is one of the few places that rarely gets home cooking!  This is my opinion, but I do know most B10 teams do get the benefit of calls

My from-the-stands reaction from today:

There were a handful of old players at the game and at dead balls would get put on the video board for their round of applause. Started with Watford, then Elston, Race, maybe one other. All of course got really good reactions. Then they put up Phinisee and I kid you not I think he got a bigger ovation than all of them. It was really cool to see him get his love.

We basically got the "death penalty" after Sampson.  That's a long road to come back from.  We wandered the wilderness like Moses in the later Tom Crean and Archie years.  But I think things are looking up.  This new President is certainly setting some expectations it seems to me.

He made 2 daggers, not against Rutger or Whats-a-matta U, but Butler and Purdon't. That'll always get you brownie points.

We gave ourselves the death penalty after convincing ourselves

Going to disagree here. Ignoring the Yogi-Wat-Vic-Cody teams is just that, ignoring them. One of those teams had the nations longest number 1 ranking, we lost in the SW 16, we all know why, but that was a Hell of a team and would love to have those few years of teams again. They could play with anyone.

I’ve watched IU since the 75-76 team (as a kid), the 81 team in HS, the 87 team at IU, the 90’s teams, the decline of the RMK era into mediocre late 90s, the runner up team, the 24-4 team under Sampson when Sampson-gate broke it (that was a great team), the Yogi-Cody build (more than one great team).
Program completely blew it under CAM, that was a total cluster F, still recovering from it. But 25 years? Nope.

We lost in the sweet sixteen. That was our best team in the past thirty years and we got as far as the sweet sixteen. Not good for a program with endless resources and shockingly still hungry fan base.

Man... That 12-13 team, Zellers Sophomore year, would be the #1 team in the country this year... Sigh.. they'd easily be Top 5 every season since.
