This new contract is great for many reasons.

  • It keeps C^3 at IU for the foreseeable future. The guy has shown he's a winner.
  • It shows IU is finally serious about football. This helps with:
    • recruiting
    • hiring assistant coaches when the current ones inevitably leave to become HC themselves
    • hiring C^3's replacement when the time comes
    • this, plus winning, will further change the perception about IU football

Just the other day, Cigs said on the Dan Patrick Show: "It feels like this is where I'm supposed to be."

We've jumped the gun after football success in the past (some guy named Allen), and the results were disastrous.

Though Cigs is 63, this doesn't feel so fleeting -- as if it might actually be somewhat sustainable. Let's hope that's the case.

Even when we were winning, I wasn't buying what Allen was selling. No fans at the games and the schedule was even weaker than this year but mainly it was that IU still made tons o mistakes so didn't seem all that well coached.

Yes, you would think so but I’m curious what the actual number is. Sure it will come out shortly.

That’s the key — what is the buyout.  Someone can always pay it.

Allen caught lightning in a bottle with 2 great coordinators. He was not a good coach.

I was wondering the same thing.

Basically sounds like he is getting 9mm a year.

Maybe we don’t owe the retention 1mm per year if he is fired?

Also, I wonder what his buyout is if someone wants to try to poach him.

That is my question. It had to have gone up considerably from $8M or Dolson is an idiot, which he’s not. I haven’t seen that number yet.

Coordinators were 100% the key for Allen.

Cig also has great coordinators. (NOTE: I am in no way comparing Cig and Allen). Will be interesting to see how well he can fill those positions when the assistants are inevitably offered HC opportunities.

Dolson is not an idiot but part of the equation is how high of a buyout did Cig agree to? If it’s too low, which I doubt, it would provide him some wriggle room to move on.

Hopefully we are talking 50-75mm+++

I guarantee if we lose our defensive coordinator we'll do better than a Georgia DB coach they were happy to see leave.

I doubt it's that much, I'm hoping for $30M plus. Still doable for some schools probably, but at least difficult to buy out a coach, pay that much, and then pay the coach. Plus $30 would be a nice little war chest.

There’s no comparison between Cig and Allen. Allen had never been a HC above the HS level. Cig has been a HC at multiple levels of college football. Cig also had other schools sniffing around and Dolson didn’t want to give him a reason to even think about leaving.

My thought was more of trying to land a coach that has had success (winning records) with more than one program and left their previous schools in good shape. That means, most likely the ages of this type of coach will be older than 45 and more likely in their 50s or 60s. For me it's about establishing a foundation. Will it work? Who knows, we're talking IUFB here.

The extension basically tells me what I have desired pretty much my entire life since I was a wee one watching my beloved IUFB.

Also, restroom and seating upgrades baby!

This has to be the best football season dream I've ever had. Don't wake me up.
