AZ Hoosier Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 How many quality college coaches have said that Indiana was their dream job over the years? And how many have we hired? I know Painter was jonesing hard to play at IU and possibly end up coaching here Brad Stevens Bruce Pearl I am sure there are others... but our ADs can't find their butts with both hands and a flashlight.

If Brad Stevens won't take the job for 10 million a year for 7 years, then that should tell you something.

IUrocker Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 Most people were surprised and happy/relieved that we went ahead with getting rid of Tom Allen and actually getting a no-nonsense guy like Cignetti to try and renew the way people look at IU football. Maybe something like that could give people hope that when it does come time to part ways with Mike Woodson that it kinda loosens the strings a bit on what type of guy we go out and get to turn IU basketball into what it should be. For instance, someone like a Chris Beard may not seem as unlikely of a prospect now that we’ve seen what they actually did with the football hire. Not saying I’m pulling for him one way or the other, but interesting to wonder if the football move they actually made could show proof that they’re a little more willing to go a different route to get things turned around once our bridge time with Woodson is over. I could be completely wrong and it’s just my personal optics on the situation, but it really just seems like Dolson made the Woodson hire with something in mind that went beyond what happens after Mike Woodson is coach.

coonhounds Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 Let's just say paying jhs a huge chunk of NIL to stay another year and develop would have been nice. Where is this program next year if mm and ware go pro like they want and perhaps malik? It's going to be hard to build if we keep getting mildly decent players and go pro after a year. southsidehoosier Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 Crean, Archie and Woodson are locked in an escape room. Crean has the puzzle to solve of how to offensively game plan against a zone. I've always thought guys like Beard and Marshall would kill it here. I go back to what the Marquette beat writer said when we hired Crean. It's exactly what I was getting at when I said outside of Sampson the fans have hated all the hires. "That's not to say that Crean's a perfect fit. In my estimation, his biggest strength and biggest weakness are horribly mismatched with Indiana. Crean's biggest strength is his ability as a promoter. His pre-game Jumbotron messages to fans, a mind-blowing number of promotional give-aways, and his tradition of shaking hands with the student section on the way out to the court all helped to build interest in the program. And while it never hurts to be a great promoter (just ask Bruce Pearl), I'm not sure that that's what Indiana needs. Indiana basketball has never seemed to me like one of those things that needs much promotion. People in Indiana are always going to be basketball crazy, even if you don't give then a bobblehead and constantly shake their hands. They don't need to put butts in the seats--they just need someone that knows basketball. And that brings me to what I see as possibly Crean's biggest weakness--he's a pretty shaky game coach. Simply put, if there are 15 seconds left on the clock and my team's down 2 points, I'm not feeling real confident if I look over at the bench and see Tom Crean putting together the plan (why do I feel like I'm foreshadowing a Wisconsin loss at Indiana next year where I end the night feeling like I'm being repeatedly kicked in the groin). I could be wrong, but Indiana seems to me, more than almost anywhere else, to be a place where they'd value an Xs and Os genius. Tom Crean is not that. His ability to get guys to run through walls for him can mitigate this weakness a lot of the time, but I have to think that his lack of remarkable basketball acumen with not play well with a fan base that expects their coach to be a skillful tactician." https://chriswesthoops.blogspot.com/2008/04/tom-creans-leaving-huh.html?m=1 str8baller, sweetpain, Dave from Dayton and 1 other 4

Sent from my SM-A326U using Tapatalk Totally agree. To be remotely optimistic about next year, you've got to be banking on returning at least Mackenzie and Malik. That is far from being guaranteed (hopefully we can hold onto Malik at least). Without those two, we have one 5-star committed and a roster full of transfer candidates/role players at best. They really need to finish the season strong and land a killer class in the spring. The buyout after this year is 12.5M, I wonder what it is after next season... I'm not saying push Woody now or then, just curious (by the end of January/mid-Feb I could feel very differently...). I'm going to support Woody and root for this team. Depending how the rest of the conference season goes, we may need to be more fluid in our planning and accelerate the succession timeline. That's where I'm at right now. "Woody is not the guy" yes... I think 99.9% of our fans will admit that. I still hope this team figures things out, firstly because I'm a fan, but also because it will put us in better position to go get "the guy" ... if we don't make the tournament this season and don't have a class of studs in the spring, is there really a point in a 4th season w/ Woody? Guess it depends on the $$$. Kentuckysucks 1

Wonder if he wishes he was dominating college basketball while improving his game and potentially going higher in the draft. Even if he doesn't personally feel that way, I hope Mackenzie considers that. Not sure about JHS's family background but MM comes from a financially comfortable family... in other words nobody is relying on him to improve their situation. I know he stated his goal of being 1 and done but have to think it would be best for him to get another year of development under his belt coonhounds 1

It seems like we're always getting one 5 star and some role players who may or may not be ready as freshmen. I want a class with 4-5 top 100 guys that really feels like we're building something. This staff spends a lot of time on players they don't get. craigyv88 1
