It's really amazing how positive he's stayed through a rocky 2 years for CJ. Seems like a great guy and a great dad. Many could take notes on his humility.
I did notice his tone changed a bit during and after the Illinois game. Still positive, but definitely (and rightfully!) frustrated.
Faith is a powerful thing. I have seen many remain positive in much worse situations

Yeah, I can understand it. Unfortunately he hasn’t flourished in his minimal time but I was hoping he’d see the court in Illinois.  I wondered if that was internal punishment for the flagrant. I kinda think it was. His long 2 takes and percentage pain me but I love his active hands on defense.

I thought it was assumed that it was punishment. I wasn’t in the game thread so maybe not. That would be very problematic for Xavier Johnson reasons.

I don't believe it was punishment. I believe the reason CJ didn't play at Illinois was because Woodson wanted to go back to basics on defense.  The seniors, Walker and Leal, have a better understanding of positioning and the defensive rotations.

I ran into CJ's father around Indy before the holidays, and he couldn't have been nicer and a better ambassador for the program.  I mentioned I had younger kiddos and we make it to a few games each season, and  out of the blue he encouraged me to reach out before I take the family down to Bloomington again and he would get CJ to meet my little guys.

Impressive family, no matter what happens to CJ's playing career moving forward I will be cheering for the young man.

Agreed. Want things to workout for him/them

Obviously this is a conversation for a couple of months down the road, but I think it’s fair to assume next year’s roster will look radically different.

Let’s hope it does if the individual doesn’t want to be here

I love how NIL can help pull in talented, big name players, however Leal's tweet, "For the name on the front of that jersey" has lost it's luster with most players these days! You can say what you want, but it's true. You get more guys on a team that want to play for that school and that coach......you've got one hell of a team.... JMO

GO IU!

To build a team and a foundation like a purdue you need guys like Leal. Sadly Woodson has only one recruit and it's all about the portal. Not how you build a program. Plus I think Leal and galloway were archie recruits anyway.

Can we save the season?  What do we need to do to salvage this year?  Short of winning the Big Ten Tournament, what would be satisfactory?  Should making the NIT be our goal at this point? What do we want to see the rest of the year?  We currently stand at 14-10 overall and 6-7 in a weak Big Ten.  That has us currently 7th in the Big Ten.  We have 4 home games and 3 road games remaining.  The home games are winnable. All of the remaining home opponents have losing Big Ten road records (Northwestern 1-5, Nebraska 0-7, Wisconsin 3-4, Michigan State 2-5).  Would winning 2 of 3 on the road (Penn State, Maryland, Minnesota) be out of the question?  If we go 6-1 down the stretch that would put our record at 20-11.  Assuming we win one Big Ten Tournament game we would be 21-12.  That should get us an NIT invite.

What I want to see the rest of the year is:

  1. Improve the defense (we are currently 91st in Kenpom)
  2. Improve the rebounding (all 5 guys need to be rebounding on the defensive end)
  3. Improve shot selection (avoid long 2-pt shots, shoot more threes)
  4. Improve Cupps confidence on offense.  We need him shooting when he's open.
  5. Get Johnson back and have him finish his last year strong.  I don't want any player's career to end on a sour note.

If wishes were horses.........and I don't mean that in a mocking sense.  IMO we're so far into the season that nothing significant is going to change.  Maybe for a half or even 1 full game, we play lockdown defense and crash the boards and the other things you mentioned but how our individual players are playing is so ingrained at this point that they won't change on a consistent basis over our remaining games.

Yeah hoping that a team is going to change after 24 games into the season is just like hoping a 66 year old coach is going to suddenly change the way he constructs a team and implements his playing style.

Not happening.

Tom Coverdale turns 44 today. Seems like just yesterday he was hobbling through a sprained ankle during our crazy 2002 NCAA tourney run.

Not a great player, but pretty good. Seemed like he got the most out of his ability. He went to school years after I did, so I obviously didn't know him. Maybe it was sorta the Huck Finn look, but he always just seemed kinda ornery to me. Not saying that's bad or anything. Just an observation.

Happy Birthday, Tom!
