I am not saying I want Fife as the head coach. But it's not bonkers...? UNC and Duke which have had way way more success than IU literally gave assistants the head gig after NO head coaching experience. So not sure it would be considered bonkers. Fife is rolling the dice that the current staff greatly succeeds. If they do? He's a strong (likely?) candidate to succeed Woody. If the current staff does not succeed? It's going to be hard for Fife to ever be a serious candidate. It's a smart calculated risk. If he wasn't plugged in he'd arguably have a far lesser chance at the IU head gig. THIS I agree with. My hope is that he is hired at Butler once Lavall is fired and he goes on a 4-5 year run with them to make his name and then we hire him. No, I don't want Butler to be very good but if I am Butler that is who I would go after. Kentuckysucks and vemmeistars 2 Quote

lillurk Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 1. Feel what you feel, post what you post, but the season’s not over. I understand the likely outcome, and I think everyone agrees the NIT would be a disappointment. 2. …but there are degrees of disappointment. Caring about a basketball team isn’t zero sum. The program is in vastly better position than it was a year ago. If IU misses the tournament it will be by a very small margin — flip a game here or there. And IU was in tons of close games. That’s a different sort of disappointment than getting run off your own floor by Indiana State on the first night of the season. 3. If you think IU’s failure to win close games 2019-present is reflective of some unchangeable character that infected the program, I understand being big mad. I think it’s more than likely just a couple things: bad luck, and less talent (especially at guard). 4. The luck, well, just shake your head. The talent can be fixed. IU is the sort of place where it can be fixed without miracles. And one of the big sources of the dearth of guard talent isn’t coaching anywhere right now. 5. This dovetails with the source of some other frustration, I sense: whataboutnextyear? A good question, of course. I don’t know the answer. But Woody did alright last summer, knows more of what to expect and what he needs this time around. IU had the best defense in the conference this year, and I think more guys CMW and co. pick will mean they get better on the other side of the ball. hoosierfan6157, woodenshoemanHoosierfan, Chris007 and 4 others 5 2 Quote

Missing the tournament will be a failure and I don't think that is debatable. But that doesn't mean the Woody era is doomed to fail. He still has the same recruits coming in that he had before the season and they are in on some really good players. The defense was a major improvement this year and it was fun to watch at times. The offense just needs shot makers, same story for the last half decade. Also, IMO Woody was 2/3 (X and Durr were positives) in the transfer market last year which gives me confidence he can make some good moves this year. HOPEFULLY IU can get some much needed player development that this program lacked under Archie and we can get back to having top end Big Ten talent on this roster. AKHoosier Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 I understand everything is cyclical, but you have your head in the sand if you don't realize the only B1G programs we're clearly ahead of at this point are Nebraska, Minnesota, Maryland, Penn State, and Northwestern. The rest have passed us by. We'll probably lose TJD and Race after this year, so how does it get better before it gets worse? Woodson is looking at a 4 year rebuild, which means he'll be well over 65 when we get back to respectability. Does he have the energy for that? Yeah I have my doubts to say the least. Admittedly I was off the bandwagon as soon as his hire was announced, but was encouraged with the Fife hire and Hunter/Rosemond on the bench. But now? A whole season is pretty much under his belt and the rest of the B1G knows how to negative recruit IU. They've seen his offense, and refusal to give major minutes to younger players. We're missing a hell of a lot of ingredients in the recipe for success. Jeff_Boy_Ardee 1 Quote

Teams sag off our players when they’re behind the arc, both because we can’t hit 3s and because our two best players are post guys. It seems like almost every 3 Xavier takes is uncontested. vemmeistars Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 (edited) He said he hasn't decided. But would you prefer Race to come back for 1 year or have Geronimo for 3 more years? Obviously, would love to have both, but I do wonder if playing time is a concern for Geronimo. Edited March 8, 2022 by vemmeistars Quote
