I like his #1 - Otzelberger... but the rest of the list? Hard pass.

Would he come? I mean, isn’t he an Iowa State former player? He’s got the change to do it right for his school unlike Woody….why would he leave? We say nil and money but Iowa state can match us if they want to keep him bad enough….

He was born in Milwaukee and went to Wisconsin Whitewater... his wife played volleyball at Iowa State and there's obvious family ties to the Ames area... but Bloomington is not that far away... would be a tremendous hire, IMO.

It's laughable that you think THEY negotiated an easy buyout so he could jump ship to IU instead of making it easier for them to can him in the event that he didn't pan out. C'mon now

Both could be true...

Even hired a search firm to make sure we follow the process.

I saw that referenced and you can probably take it at least 2 different ways.  One, we don't have a replacement in place.  Two, we do have the replacement and the search firm is purely for optics.   I'd have to go back and look for it on 247 but didn't Raby kind of indicate hiring a search firm was for appearance?

For as much as I dislike Badman he is plugged in and if he starts talking Otzelberger to IU I will generally believe that is the pick. I’d be super stoked if that is the case.

Goodman explicitly said he talked to Oltzelberger and a job like IU is a nonstarter because he doesn’t want to be in a fishbowl. I don’t take much what Goodman says as fact but he sounded pretty concrete in this one.

From an SI article

If May decided to leave Michigan, the amount he would have to pay Michigan back (with “reasonable written notice”) would be as follows:

• April 1, 2025 or before: $5,000,000 + 1,513,000 signing bonus. Total is $6,513,000.

• Between April 1, 2025-April 30, 2025: $5,000,000

• Between May 1, 2025-April 30, 2026: $4,000,000

• Between May 1, 2026-April 30, 2027: $2,000,000

• Between May 1, 2027-April 30, 2028: $1,000,000

• Between May 1, 2028-April 30, 2029: $500,000

Lower than Woodson. IU got taken to the cleaners on that contract.

Thanks to Quinn and Ferguson

Search firm may also help with background checks, data on market compensation, and good old CYA to make sure we don’t miss anything.

Believe we also retained a search firm for the Cig hire. Like you alluded to, I don’t put much stock into the “search” part of the title.

Clearly  you've missed the point... drinking is not necessarily bad. But abusing alcohol is. And what happens when one drinks can be life altering... and in the case of chronic alcoholics, disqualifying...

Great then we're all in agreement. It shouldn't be about whether or not he drinks but whether or not he's going to get into legal trouble of that kind again while drinking. So let's stop hand wringing over the fact that he's probably still drinking

I’m sorry, but Goodman is an idiot. To hear him (and most national guys) tell it, no one is available, unless they are a grossly underpaid mid-major coach. (Almost) anyone is available for a price, and even if IU basketball has lost a lot of its luster, it still can meet nearly any price it wants to.

They could hire Gates tomorrow and even with an 0-18 conference record on his resume they would still be in better shape than they have been the last 4 years.    Definitely could aim higher however if he actually was hired they would have hired an actual college basketball coach that is well respected and looked at as a very good young coach.   There is a reason he is getting mentioned by national writers.  It’s not just message board posters pushing it.   In my opinion it doesn’t get down to him but if we ended with Gates I would be on board snd ready to roll.   Probably most would turn their nose up at it and make fun of it

For me the goal isn’t to be better than what we are now. It’s to be a national title contender year in and year out. That list is very short. I do think May could be that type of coach.

I don't play in "could". I play in most likely.

Mr. Michigan AD, if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to coach at IU someday soon. With the odds of IU firing Woodson within the next year or so, could we make it easy for me to jump ship in the likely event that they carry out that firing?

This conversation/thought process almost certainly didn't take place. It doesn't happen like that, especially within the conference

Yes I believe it’s appearance only. They probably cross the T’s and dot the I’s.
