Woodson has the potential (mind you...potential) to be a GREAT recruiter--he has so so many recently retired NBA names that could be on staff. Also, he has been the 'offensive coordinator' for some very fast-paced, efficient, modern-era, three point friendly NBA teams. It's contrary to expectations from an old-school Knight-era guy, but Woody is a guy that really gets an offense humming.

Beilein? Great coach...great coach. Great guy. I worry a lot about recruiting with him too--not because of the 'thugs' comment--a good man like Beilein will have plenty of people to vouch for his character. However, it WILL be used against a 68+ year old coach that his shelf life is short. If not this year, then  a year or two from now for sure.

If those are my choices give me Woody every time.

He very well could be a great recruiter. It sounds like he's a personable person. He played in the NBA for over a decade and has coached in it for over two. He's never recruited before, but he's a black man from Indianapolis who played at IU. That would help him relate to the kids he's recruiting.

I still don't want him but I'm trying to look on the bright side this morning.

We don't really know who option 1 has been.

What if it's been Porter Moser, Enfield, Mike Lewis, Drew, Musselman, or Oats all along?

Can anyone really tell me why that cannot be the case? And if so, we would not get a whisper for a few more weeks.

One thing I'm reasonably sure of. If we don't hear by the end of this week, then we are not going after Beilein, Woodson, Fife, Beard, Alford, or Mack. That would happen by this Friday, give or take a day or two.

If Porter is our #1 option then cancel the IU mens program.

If it’s not your money why would you care? I’d rather pay a large salary and have a lesser buyout if things went south.

I care because I care about IU basketball and want this hire to work. I don't want to be the Yankees and just throw money at every personnel issue and hope it works. Pick the right guy (it's not someone that played at IU) and pay him well. Just holding an auction for "who wants $8 mil a year!" doesn't seem to be the approach for success.

Ehhh, I like both these candidates and am fine with a strong offer, but neither of them merit THAT much $$$.

I'm afraid that would put too much pressure on them because if you are getting paid like the top 5 coaches you better produce like the top 5 coaches. Let them earn that over a few years.

Then be happy with another low offer for a mid major coach. Why do we care if they get 3 mil or 6 mil? Got to pay to get one of those guys. No reason to be cheap because obviously that hasn't worked.

He's gonna be 63 this week. He can be a recruiting closer, but he's not gonna be out there beating the AAU bushes.

However, I really think his best recruiting plus is who he could put on staff. In the past ten years, he's been hanging out with so many big-name, high character NBA players: Felton, Delk, about to retire DeAndre Jordan (would be an incredible assistant), Melo and Rose, Jamal Crawford (what a GREAT get he would be). Too many others to name.

Your reasoning is sound. Between THOSE two, I would lean towards Woodson.

However, does anyone here truly believe Mike Woodson is the best coach IU can get? Not asking "could he succeed?" or "Could we do worse?" of course the answer to both is yes. Simply asking is Mike Woodson, +60yo NBA journeyman that has never coached in college- the best option for IU basketball? I don't think he's even in the top 10. If Dolson thinks so then: A) He burned through a lot of other options and we're settling or B) His list and mine bear no resemblance to each other.

Hire the best candidate you can. If that is Mike Woodson we're not looking very hard.

I will say this about Woodson.. If it’s between him and the mid major flavor of the month, I’d go with him. I want us to avoid a mid major guy at all costs. If Woodson would have his teams play an offense that doesn’t make me want to stab my eyes out like Archie’s did then I’d give him a shot.

Not that it should matter but don't you have to have a degree to be an assistant? I don't believe any of those players you named have one. But I could be wrong.

Well he's coaching the slowest paced team in the entire NBA at the moment.

So...

There is a difference between paying well and making them the highest paid coach in NCAA. The original comment was "offer $8million".

Best coach we could get?

A great question that we'll never be able to answer in 2021. This I think we can all agree is true:

Somewhere out there is a first ballot hall of fame coach that is in his 30's or early 40's and on someone's staff. We can get him ... now.

THAT is the best coach we could get. Now name him (cause I can't ;)
