General Coach Candidate News

So Dolson has made it clear that he wants an NBA-style offense ...... is that because he thinks it's the best way to lure top talent or because "modern" offense is the best way to win games at the college level?

I realize it could very well be both, but the difference really does speak to Dolson's vision for the program ----- is IU a "destination school" for the 4 and 5 stars (if so we know who we'll be competing with) or is IU a place where kids can commit for 4 years and win that doesn't necessarily require the top talent?

Putting it more succinctly are we:

1) Hoping we can get a coach who can consistently recruit NBA talent

2) Hoping we can get a coach who can develop kids and ultimately win at the college level with lesser talent (not necessarily future NBA players) but kids who play hard and play with a high basketball IQ on both ends of the floor?

I have no concern with Woodson as a candidate overall, except I believe that puts Dolson's vision firmly in the "1" camp ----- and if we're trying to be Kentucky or Duke while running a clean program I say good luck. I think the Dolson thesis may be mistaken if that's the case. Hope to be wrong if that's the direction we go and certainly am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'd try try more to be like Kansas and UNC. Top talent that sticks around and top talent that leaves with a play style that's exciting and fun for fans and players.

Didn't Anthony Thompson have some trouble becoming an assistant coach because his degree was not complete?

I'm unaware of that situation. I know Jason Kidd was talking to some schools but it didn't work out because he didn't have a B.S.

He now has his degree.

While I tend to agree, we need to get the right guy if we can.  I'd rather lose 3 or 4 players that are impatient than to get the wrong guy.

Now, who is the right guy?  That's the question.

The players are getting jumpy I think.  They probably read the same stuff we do and from the outside looking in, this looks like it is circling the drain.

Anybody can jump in and say there is time and things like that, but Dolson is in direct contact with the players and it sounds like any patience talk he is giving them is falling on deaf ears because they probably perceive things like many of us, there was a huge miss on Plan A and there did not seem to be much plan in place for anyone after that.

I agree, you want the right guy before you worry about losing players but you really, truly put the next guy at a disadvantage if you have him lose half his team and then take so long to get him in place that he is missing out on these transfers.  So if we are waiting on one of the guys in the tournament, I hope Dolson is making really damn sure he has a better handle on their willingness to actually come here than he did for Stevens.

If we have another 3 or 4 year complete rebuild, you can just mark this program DOA.

Are you saying it is Jason Kidd!?!

Again, just kidding (although I expect this rumor to hit twitter).

Imagine listening to Dakich if Alford is hired and he has any type of success. kill me now

Then again, any chance that DD's ego shrinks back to just "huge" if we do hire Alford and he craps the bed?

I'm not a fan of DD at all, but I don't hate him to the point that I would sacrifice another 3-4-5 years of IU basketball to see him eat crow...

And that's just one of many reasons why Alford should NOT be the next coach at IU.

I'll only be a distracted fan.  I'll try to let myself become a fair weather fan.  We will see how that goes.  I feel defeated and it's only been 8 days.  I need some real names to get me enthusiastic again.

I agree with you Wayne. I let myself fall for Brad Stevens and honestly my expectations for anyone else but him are drastically bad.

I wouldn't sacrifice anything. I would root for Indiana just like I always have.

I would simultaneously hate hearing DD talk about it.

Simple as that

Franklin transferring. He heard Woodson was coming huh..

Rabby and a few other talking heads say that the move is exploratory and Armaan could remain with IU.

If Woodson is honestly under serious consideration, I'd ask why not Keith Smart.  Former IU player, former NBA head coach, highly respected assistant, and 6-7 years younger than Woodson.

He's younger but his coaching resume is a lot worse than Woodson's.

This was my initial fear last week when the Stevens train got started. That the possibility of Stevens would ruin our expectations of any other coach (regardless of how good).

Of course by Friday I had drunk the cool-aid...

I’m thinking that someone in the athletic department is leaking names. The question is are they real names under consideration. I would think Scott would be keeping a lid on his assistants or keep specific information withheld from them if they really are that chatty. I think Scott probably is smart enough to keep things that are real under wraps.

I thought the athletic department staffers had their panties in a wad because they were being kept in the dark? Both statements cannot be true if the names being tossed around are actually being considered... either they know or they don't...

It's like testing the waters but come on, every big time program will be texting him by 3PM today.

Mussleman is already meeting with him at Buffalouis probably.

It makes sense, just as long as we don't hear the senior Mr. Franklin mention "it's time to be selfish".

Ask Jawaan Howard about him, though.  NBA "resume" is about a lot more than wins and losses, especially if you're trying to translate it to college success.
