Did #2 really happen? I remember it being discussed on the forums at the time, but if that had gotten out wouldn't it have been a national story? Not saying it didn't, but would have assumed that sports shows would have had a reaction to that story and I can't recall that ever getting traction beyond the forums.

Yes, it happened;

The FoxSports.com article included a copy of a text message that was sent from the Baylor assistant Mark Morefield to Huss, saying that Baylor had the power to deport Perea if he did not go to Baylor.

“I guarantee you if he does [commit to another school] he will be in Colombia for the spring and summer and next year. Don’t forget it,” the text message said.

no this doesn't count! IU is only on ESPN because of Illinois. IU is a trash program that nobody, I mean NOBODY wants to watch. DWS

Kinda yea. Illinois and Indiana fans will care to watch. Probably some peeps who want to see Ayo and Kofi. Pacers game is at 8, so there will honestly be some TV battling in some houses.

I still like Scott. Not a good moment with HP and he ruffled a few feathers with established coaches as he was getting started. Have not seen a consistent flow of bad stuff from his program. Not my top guy but a definite upgrade

Haven't you been paying attention? It doesn't matter why they are on ESPN it definitely still counts.... Especially with Recruits because they don't change channels, they only watch what ESPN spoon feeds them.... Only real basketball people would watch if it was on other channels but since it is on ESPN all recruits nationwide will have all eyes on us and it could help or hurt our perception.

He may not but that article is about 9 years old and if not mistaken those were rules/restrictions that the NCAA has since eliminated

Not sure exactly where it was, either the start of Sportscenter or Game Day but they had an IU fan in the upper right corner that busted out a "Fire Archie" sign.  Fun times!

Cue the Twitter mob saying how awful and ridiculous our fans are...

Self-defeating is never a good idea. If Archie doesn’t succeed so be it, but sabotage of his chances is just plain stupid.

I grapple with how to put about the more out-going members of the IU fan base in context, particularly in terms of how they impact a coach, the team, recruits, AD and other program decision-makers and influences.

For the most part, blaming the fans for outwardly calling for a coach to be fired is really just a symptom of the cause. If win were winning these gestures wouldn't be made. Also, how else do people express the desire for improvement when they are otherwise powerless?

On the other hand IU has fans that display little perspective on the opposite side. They see MSU have a bad season or UW have a bad game and mock cry for Archie to be fired. Poking at other members of the fan base and not using context doesn't help the whole of us.

It’ll be a small minority of our fans, but those that are sabotaging recruiting are just that.

Using that logic, if we hyper-focused on the social media base of every school, the likes of Incarnate Word would be raking in all the 5 stars. Not saying that there aren't s***-heads that claim to be IU fans, but it seems that people want to make more of themselves when re-tweeting or liking an Instagram post also means 0.0000000001% in where a high school kid decides to play college ball.

I don’t really see how that’s self-defeating or sabotage, tbh. Archie is in year 4 and continues to not deliver. Fans can’t go to games (or boycott games, for that matter), so they are voicing their frustration in one of the few ways they can. And they’re doing it by going after the guy in charge instead of the players. I see nothing wrong with it. Fans wouldn’t be holding ‘fire Archie’ signs if we were succeeding.

I would not do it but when folks assure us Archie will be back another year I have suggested such things like this could accelerate the decision to make a change.  No fans are at games but if they were I bet they would have been expressing displeasure at our recent home games. These kind of things cause an AD or decision makers to act.

Does it hurt recruiting, sure, but to be fair we struck out on several recruits even as we headed into what most thought would be a top 35 team and a good year. If we could not recruit when things looked good this will definitely hurt now.  Which again the AD will see.

Crean was in a similar situation and suddenly the Makers came for a visit and Thomas B signed and he was able to extend his stay. Winning is the easiest way for Archie to stay but if there is some reasonable hope about next year (big recruits) then that will help.

Frustration is building across the fan base. Frustrated fans will likely express themselves and/or move on.

Now at 40 straight polls not in the Top 25. And freaking Purdue makes an appearance at 24.

A lot of teams are getting ranked this season. I think it's a combination of the wide disparity in the number of games being played and the traditional powers being down. This would have been a great opportunity for us to get ranked and start re-establishing our brand. Leave it to Archie Miller to completely waste that chance.

I think the only Big Ten teams that haven't been ranked at some point have been Nebraska, Penn State and...IU. Maybe Maryland. It's still ridiculous.
