General Coach Candidate News

So I couldn’t get much from him unfortunately. But, to me that’s a good thing. There’s been pretty much zero chatter, nor leaks for a month about coaches. He said it doesn’t matter that the season is still going on, he would still hear of legitimate names. And he hasn’t. I asked him if the “5 min zoom call” was legitimate. He laughed and said no. No one at brads status would only give 5 min of time. That’s disrespectful.

I also asked if he heard the $100 million number and if there was a verbal agreement (which came from the IU sources via Chris, Yeagley, etc). He hadn’t heard that but he did confidently say Brad turned down a 7 year 70 million offer last time. I asked if I should trust the IU sources from a weeks ago, and he said at this point I could, because it’s eerily quiet on his end. He thinks Dolson has known for months who the next coach will be. That’s all I’ve got.

Thanks.

Thanks for sharing, nice update to what is going on. The silence really is interesting. Seems like only a couple of agents are out there trying to get raises, and most of those seem like 0% chance type of guys. Really sounds like Goodman is the only person who has heard something resembling a no from Brad, but the not a candidate statement gets more interesting if Dolson already had someone on the hook not named Stevens. That would make the statement 100% accurate, but would be strange to happen so quickly-- seems to me it could only be 'true' in that sense if Brad had turned down the job a while ago (like prior to Woody getting refired) and Dolson moved on. Coach szn is fun.

Longtime lurker, member of the original Peegs forum years ago.  I do not consider myself an insider, but I do have a few tertiary connections to the program.  My sister babysat Scott Dolson for a few years.   President Whitten's famous quiche recipe was given to her by my mother in law, and my wife is the soccer coach at Wellesley High School.

I played for Coach Knight, albeit briefly, knee injuries cost me my career, and consequently cost Coach Knight his 4th banner.  Thankfully my relationship with the Celtics leadership offered me a soft landing and a lucrative career.  All this to say that I am greatly indebted to this forum and the information produced here.  Without the really connected folks like RTZ keeping me informed, I would be completely in the dark regarding the next IU Coach and the possibility of landing someone like Brad Stevens.

Hmm.  Wellesley High School soccer and you don't have any information about a certain soccer player?

Any info on who at the University will be in charge of this?  Is it fully on Scott this time or will others be allowed to step in.  I trust that given the right information and being left alone Scott will make the right decision.  At least I hope so this time.  IU Basketball cannot afford another bad hire.

Thanks for the updates.

Thanks RTZ.

I don't know who we get, I continue to feel good that Scott will get this right.  I like the lack of leaks/info in this process so far.

I can't remember who said it earlier(Edit, credit: @Old Friend), so apologies to that person, but this really feels like the first unobstructed coaching search in my lifetime where IU is in decent shape. I assume Crean was not forced or hired via coercion from boosters, but rather someone who wanted the challenge of a program that had committed seppuku. After nailing the Cignetti hire, I agree with you. Personally just have worries due to basketball being mismanaged at IU basically my entire adult life.

So maybe Dolson has known for months?  Maybe there was an “agreement” with our next coach finalized BEFORE Woodson’s “retirement” announcement.

Dolson would have known the scrutiny and microscopic attention an active coaching search would produce - right down to flight tracking ;)  Leaks would be difficult to contain if a number of agents and other players were in active works.

The info from our insiders would be a round peg in a square hole, but it would explain why it’s so quiet - because nothing really IS happening right now. It was already done before we knew it was happening. That’s playing chess when others are playing checkers.

Old Friend said it.

I can't entirely shake the last 25 years either.  Aside from the Trustee/President/Donor meddling, am I missing something that has held IUBB back?  I don't think so, but I can't be sure, it's hard to be this bad for 25 years.

This is by far the best shape we've been in for a hire.  2001 we had the search committee that didn't interview anyone (lmao).  2006 Herbert meddled.  2008 our program had exploded.  2017 we had an inexperienced AD (I think this hire was pretty unobstructed).  2021 we all know.  Now 2025 we had a seemingly good AD and for the first time we are selling top-5 player payroll to prospective coaches, which is very powerful.  Who wants an extra $2-3M per year to afford 2-3 more elite players?  A lot of coaches.  The IU job is awesome, we've just hired bad coaches.

I've said this before, aside from Boy Wonder I don't know who we should hire.  I've never met these coaches and heard them talk about (i) why they are successful, (ii) how they would translate to IU, (iii) their vision for IUBB and what they need from the AD, and (iv) how they would handle a big job like IU.  It is Otz, Lloyd, Dusty, Ben?  I don't know.  Scott has to figure that out and then get them here.
