General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

It's become evidently clear that, unless the hire is BS, there are going to be unhappy folks regardless.

IMO, we are not a blue blood program anymore. Can we restore that? Possibly. Should we be turning our collective noses up at highly qualified candidates that check most, but not all the boxes? I don't think our cache these days warrants that. I hope whoever is named the next head coach is given some time to acclimate and get a chance to instill his culture before any part of the fanbase turns sour.

This was always the risk of not firing Woody when a serious program would have. Dusty’s earning/job power could only go down staying at a job as bad as FAU. He was always leaving whether it was for us or someone else. Anyone thinking Dusty has a low buyout because he “knew” IU would most likely be open is huffing paint. Both of his buyouts (vol/nonvol) are relatively low. It’s for the same reason a not insignificant of people here thought Dusty “wasn’t ready” and “needed to prove it at P5” before getting a job like IU. Dusty didn’t go into a negotiation and say, “Thanks, for giving me the first high major job of my career, but I’m am going to need you to leave my voluntary departure buyout reasonable to help a conference rival hire me away next season in case they fire their shitty coach and I turn out to be a good coach.” It’s utter nonsense. We missed the boat. Hope I am wrong, and I’m not saying I don’t think one day he will coach at IU, but I have a really hard time believing it will be next season.

Nothing you said explains why Michigan agreed to such a low buyout for him to leave, but a high buyout to fire him….

There’s a lot of “backup quarterback syndrome” in play.

Ya know; the guy that has never thrown an interception, looks awesome mopping up against blowout-level competition? That guy.

I’d like a younger guy, but at least give me a young guy that’s taken on some adversity against P5 schools.

So now they had to have ncaa wins and coached in p4 conferences. See you didnt say that.

Kelsey had 250+ wins

Pope had 180+ wins

I said established coach. Not ever being in a P4 conference and never winning a tournament game is not established. That should be clear.

JFC. There are multiple incidents with Beard. MULTIPLE! He beats a woman multiple times, his fiancée, and is a constant drinker around campus. Not happening. Nope. No matter how some of you keep trying to wish it into existence. Not. Happening. I’m not joking.

Multiple documented incidents?

In a contract like that, I would speculate that it is because Michigan chose Dusty May.  Once a person has been selected and negotiation begins, that is the most advantageous time for the prospective hire.

That clause is in there probably because Dusty May insisted on it.  The only alternative would be if Michigan insisted on it and that does not make sense.

For me, absent Stevens or May, there are five guys that have been discussed that are young-ish, have P5 experience, are currently very successful, and have won a tourney game as a head coach:

Gates

McCasland

Byington

Pitino

Calhoun

From those five there needs to be one that is both interested in IU and would have the right personality to be the head of a major program in the fishbowl.

I'm not sure what point you think you're making. At home.. to Minnesota.

My point is, IU’s culture is losing. If we don’t hire a particular coach, it should because of what he can’t do on the court. When I see comments about winning press conferences and not a fit for IU’s culture, I have to laugh that some IU fans think we are in a position to care about stuff like that. I don’t want Cronin. But not because of his demeanor.

Because the team they are invested in lost a game they should have won.   Happens every night in college basketball.  Fans are passionate

I didn’t get a chance to watch. Thanks for the answer. My understanding is they led for 37 minutes then blew it down the stretch. I get a coach being frustrated that fans were booing in that scenario rather than supporting the team through adversity and trying to rally them to a win. That’s unhelpful and would aggravate most coaches IMO. There’s kind of a pact between fans and their teams. I don’t think his comments after the game were an example of going about that battle in the right way though.

Texas domestic violence has 2-10 year sentence.

And **** yes I am. Have daughters. Do you?

Also, I’ve said my peace. Won’t sabotage the thread any longer.

Well then stop rehashing **** that everyone on here is already aware of. I believe one of the mods has already made comments towards this very thing. We get it, you have daughters, and don't like Beard. I have daughters and I like Beard as a coach. Who cares? If you don't have something valid to add to his coaching prowess or how he'd be a good fit/bad fit, coaching wise, then I can only assume you're not done saying your peace and that we should create a separate thread for DV discussion so you can unload over there. Good day sir

Cronin would be such a bad cultural fit. Also do we really want a coach that has had a happy fanbase upon their departure?

How so? Do you mean he won't fit the culture of entitled players that drink late the night before games, call out the fan base, and swear at the HC?

All good! No images of her are public. Bite marks, abrasions, and stated he choked her from behind. From behind means she was running from him. And that’s just the public incident.
Charges dropped because she didn’t want him to lose his job or go to jail. He was going to get up to 10 years in Texas.

Never been in a fight or watched MMA, I see.  Choking someone from behind does not indicate they were running away…

People are always harp about Cronins ceiling not being good enough.  How do we know that?  He’s about the same age Sampson was when we hired him I believe.  Was Sampson’s record at WSU and Oklahoma much different than Cronin’s at Cincy and UCLA?

Sampson took Oklahoma to the final four. There is nothing as impressive on Micks resume as that.

Sampson won 72% of his games at Oklahoma. Their all time winning pct is 60.7%
