And from my perspective, IU administration would not agree to let Archie get rid of a few and bring in his guy. Zeller saved Crean's butt. But it was time for Crean to go poof. Similar to what happened at Marquette. A great irony is that, had Zeller chosen Butler, that might have given IU the courage to dump Crean after a 12-20 season, in order to hire the generational coaching talent up the road in Indianapolis. If push comes to shove, I am glad that Crean got the chance to win after taking on the coaching job when he did. But Stevens would have certainly made the leap, had he been offered in 2011. thebigweave, Dave from Dayton, str8baller and 1 other 4

Of the potentially infinite number of parallel universes that could theoretically exist, in not 1 of them was Crean fired after 2011, Zeller or no Zeller.
OKHOOSIER Posted February 18 Posted February 18 50 minutes ago, Ctf9 said: Also I think given the trauma of Archie and Woodson people are forgetting how exhausting Crean was as a human being. This is something that the Wikipedia coaching records can never capture. What does it feel like for this person to be a character in our lives? Crean had some real positives. (Remember him taking McDonald’s to a person outside the restaurant?) But he was stubborn and defensive and awkward and honestly kinda manic. And he was inconsistent, and his trajectory was going down. Recruiting was tailing off locally and nationally. Juwan and OG were diamonds in the rough but we were all tired of an irritating coach who wouldn’t adjust his turnovers or defense and who also needed to find diamonds in the rough. Most days, I remember the good parts of the Crean era. But it was time to move on from him, and it’s worth reflecting on the legit bad parts too. *Aggressively adjusts oversized pants and slams some ambiguous liquid in a dasani bottle* Ctf9 and Pagoda 2

Not that Crean would have deserved to be fired. And almost certainly the administration was not of a mind to do something so mercenary. But, in hindsight, two trips to the title game from the Horizon League should have been a clear message; 'No hard feelings, Tom, but we have to do this for the good of the program.' str8baller 1

He has said he was a former IU player and it appears he had a loyalty to Woodson. At first people thought it was Xavier Johnson but looks like that is not the case. Kopp makes sense because regardless of how few shots Kopp was getting (something that 'wasn't Mike Woodson's job' -- Mike Woodson -- Kopp continued to start. I have no problem with Kopp as a player here. I do think he would have been better off going somewhere that actually believed in the three point line. VFury and Sobchak_Security 2
