As I have stated the tournament is a numbers game.  Need a coach you can get there consistently — basically every year, or 9 of 10 at least.  Then if he gets to the second weekend on a regular basis, you got your man.  It is a lot of “luck” to go from there.  More times you’re in, more likely to break thru.

For such a simple question this is a very complex answer from an IU fan perspective.   For the old timers that have seen IU in its prime and know IU can and has done better then where they are currently they want a home run hire that gets them back to that point in IUs history as fast as possible.  Watching the decline of a once proud and storied program has been very difficult and honestly sad to watch. Hard to accept the results that  IU isn’t even a top half program in the B1G what alone what they are nationally.   IU results wise is just another program closer to Kansas St than they are Kansas.   Ius younger fans just want to see IU actually make the tourney on a consistent basis.  If you are a 20 year old fan you have seen IU play in the second weekend only 3 times in your lifetime and never in an elite 8.  All they want I’m guessing is a coach that consistently makes the tourney so at least they got a chance of making it to sweet 16s.  
 

IU as a program is in a really uncomfortable spot if you are a fan of the program.   Whoever Dolson ends up going with will possibly be the most important hire IU basketball has made in a while.   2 back to back complete failures put more pressure on the program to get it right.    Play it safe and hire a top coach that will bring stability back to a program that has underachieved for far too long or take a gamble at a higher risk option that could turn out to be the face of your program for the next 25 years.  Glad I’m not the one making the choice.  Either way I will be in here supporting whoever it is when they are hired

Just had a long sit down with a buddy getting a full update. As of now the plan is to have brad sign the contract on March 2nd. He wants to essentially finish his season as a GM with the Celtics which mainly ends in March 1st as a GM. The verbal agreement still stands but he does not want any announcement until after that point. So the signing Monday won't occur but this is all but locked down. Contract is 6 years 67 million and brad has an option to extend to 10 years after year 3. Includes promises towards IU funded NIL and assistant pools but I don't know the value behinds those numbers. 

Just be patient. Hate me because of Goodman's tweet but there is a reason for all this optimism and it's that Brad still is a verbal agreement with IU and both IU and Stevens camp agree to all contract terms. 

 

I love this if for no other reason than it keeps the pot stirring....it's fun!

Cronin is 53, Crean is 58. There is a reason one is still coaching and the other isn't. Cronin is a markedly better coach IMO, albeit not the most exciting by a longshot.

The Crean highs without the lows would be a very good result given what we’ve endured for the last decade.

Given todays NIL landscape, and that IU is much better than UCLA in that regard, that should be the base expectation for a Cronin type hire.

Further OT, but when I saw highlights of him as a HS player I hoped we'd find a way to get him, even if he was a one-trick pony.  He's stuck around the NBA so he's shown he's more than that.

Yeah to me the thing to watch with May is 1. If he agrees to an extension (not just the currently reported “AD is working on it”) and 2. If so, what are the buyout terms.

He’s aware he’d probably have at least a chance at the IU job; if he wants it, you just don’t sign until after your season. Tell your agent to haggle and give Warde Manuel the runaround on little details until the job is filled or your season is done.

Don’t forget Crean also had a final 4 appearance….I’m not saying Crean is better, Cronin is  just not a major upgrade in my opinion. Not sure what happened to Crean at Georgia, obviously he was out of his element and must have had real problems recruiting!

It sounds like you are describing Cronin!  He’s not the homerun hire but will get you to the dance every year and an occasional sweet 16.  There is no way I would want him for 25 years

This is why I think the most logical play is the proven commodity. The “home run swing” was Archie, it failed.

As a leader of the program Dolson has a real risk of fan apathy if he doesn’t get this hire right. We already have plenty of apathy with Woodson at the helm and thankfully that’s somewhat lifted with the forced retirement.

But winning the press conference won’t fix apathy, winning games will. So prioritize making sure we’ll win games at this level, and get the program on the right track. That should be priority #1.
