General Coach Candidate News

Just my opinion on Stevens, but I can't imagine he's in some sort of weeks long negotiation with Dolson/IU that could fall apart at the finish line.

Doesn't sound like Stevens style or how these things even typically play out. These things usually move fast once there's an initial framework.

IMO, he's either never been a real candidate, he's already signed (unlikely IMO, something would have leaked), or he said call me back when your season is over.

I just can't imagine there has been weeks or even months of back and forth.

Since it's BGleas saying this:

giphy (3).gif

(No, I don't actually think we have a chance.)

Probably because it happens quite a bit including 2 out of the last 4 IU coaching hires.

SMH

Woodson No

Archie No

Crean No I wouldn't say leaving Marquette is leaving a top job. It would be equivalent to a coach like McDermott leaving Creighton

Sampson yes

Also if you look at the college landscape the last few years will show you it doesn't happen often.

I’ve wondered this too. How much does the IU job pique McCollum’s interest.

No idea what his interest is.

IMO, though, if he takes the job... that's very exciting.

He has been very intentional about staying at NW Missouri State and waiting for the right opportunity to go D1.

Him leaving Drake after one year to come here would tell me not only does he covet the limelight, he wants to seek it out.

He'd be accepting the job with eyes wide open about the current state of program and fan expectations...and embrace the challenge.

Of that list, I'd be most excited for him, then Huss, then McMillan probably.

Well UK couldn't get their top choices or UL. UK probably has as much money as we do and theirq job is better than ours. Most coaches won't mess with winning or happiness so why would they leave their current jobs
You're not wrong when you say that most coaches won't mess with winning and their happiness at their current jobs. I agree that it is probably a factor with at least some of those top coaches that are named at times.

$4-6M worth of interest

6 years at $30M and he's now a rich man.  And if it doesn't work out there will always be another Drake that will hire him.  He isn't risking anything really unlike the big fish candidates.

Hopefully Dolson finds someone.  I just have a bad feeling.  Feels like we're that horny 21 year old at the Bluebird at 1:55am on Friday and only the fat chicks are left.

Been there. What about someone ran through like Self or Calipari

Top jobs don’t come open very often so quite obviously it doesn’t happen very often just by the nature of things.

And McD coming from Creighton would be bigger than all the mid major guys and absolutely qualify so thanks for confirming the 2/4 number. It also proves that getting those non-championship guys from P5 schools comes with its own risk a la Crean.

I mentioned something like this earlier but then it hit me that McCollum doesn’t appear to be a money-first kinda guy.  Who knows?

I don’t think there has been hardly any back and forth. Here is the offer, here is the counter yes and yes let’s revisit on so and so date to sign and announce. Something that simple. JMO

After the disappointment last time, I was still holding hope for Brad this time. Then last weekend I was watching the Lakers/Celtics and they kept talking about how Boston was the favorite to repeat, it crushed me

And let’s face it. Other than ego, how is 5 million a year that much better than 2. I mean, you can only spend so much money. And in a lot of these deals, you get millions even if you’re a failure and get fired. I just don’t think money matters to anybody making over a million a year.

I gotta admit. Mcdermott’s offenses are fun to watch. Offensive guru

The article you excerpted from made it seem like he got a lot of lower level job offers, which makes sense. He obviously accepted the Drake offer. If IU can’t land a D2 coach with one (great) year in the MVC, everyone needs fired. Sheesh…

For reference last year out of the MVC here were the coaching moves: Shertz to SLU and Devries to WVU. Devries prospects were almost certainly bolstered by the fact that his son would be coming along.
