I say this playfully… have you been in a coma since the turn of the century? :)

This is the problem with people setting their expectations on Brad Stevens.

If there is anyone not named Brad Stevens but in the mold of Brad Stevens over the last decade, it’s Ben McCollum.

No one knows who Dolson is focused on. But if we are hiring the head coach of Drake, the IU basketball brand has fallen tremendously! Despite the NIL war chest, blueblood status, and large coaching salary, that’s the best we can do?
Sure, McCollum could be successful at IU. But comparing it to Cig & IU football is crazy! One is the losingest program in D1 history, the other is a 5 time national champion.

I feel like IU basketball should be able to do better! Are we all delusional?!?!

We've hired historically from Army, Oklahoma, Marquette, Dayton, an NBA assistant, and our own assistant.  It's not like we are pulling from huge basketball powerhouses.

Tks for the rundown, but I disagree with the part about “the coach at Indiana needs to be a salesman/politician”.  That’s way overblown imo.  What we need is a coach who knows basketball and can infuse enthusiasm based on substance…no more bulls#%# snake oil used car salesman crap.

exactly. just be able to talk ball.

  • McCollum sucks because he is D2
  • D2 players could not start in D1
  • Brownell's family members on this board continue to push him..>Everyone else, says NO
  • Confusion and Chaos Reigns

Appreciate the update... even if it's a pretty bleak outlook... gotta trust Dolson... but keep the pitchforks handy...

I think it's less snake oil used car salesman and more the ability to interact with and keep happy a lot of different groups of people (administration, donors/boosters, AAU & HS coaches, player's handlers, grassroots fans, etc.) That's required at an IU level job much more than at lower levels. The IU job done well can make the coach the face of the state, not just the basketball team. So, I think that's what he was saying by sales/politician.

Big difference. I know a coach who has been on The Staff’s of both mid major and high major….theres a big difference in talent. Just because someone is good at the mid major level is far from a guarantee that it would translate to high major.

When Tobin Anderson beat Purdue with FDU in the tournament, a lot of the players on that team came with him from St Thomas Aquinas in D2. I think it’s fairly universally accepted that the major difference between high level D2 and power conference basketball is the big men. Guards can go at each other, lower level big men can’t really hold their own. That was one game, FDU was 21-16 that year and Anderson isn’t doing well at Iona. Guess you could say that may be the worst case scenario of a McCollum hire. But he’s light years better as a coach than Anderson. IMO the talent difference is not as much of a factor as competing against other big programs in recruiting. He’s got a long track record of identifying talent for his system. Nothing is guaranteed though.

As bad as Archie was…I really think people are quick to forget that CAM was the hottest young coach on the market. Seemingly every off season a new high major would come calling for him. Unfortunately, as is the case with some coaches in a lesser league…it didn’t work out. Kelvin was a top coach at OU, and Crean (albeit maybe not the top) was still a well-known coach. In the NIL era…we can and will pull. We are a sought out job
Some of us haven't forgotten. Wes Miller was also the hottest thing around four years. This year the name is mccollum or at least today it is

Me watching this board go at it after pushing the Ben McCollum narrative all these years haha.

People thinking McCollum is just the flavor of the month must have been unaware of him before this year. He has been highly respected in the basketball world for years.
