Frustrates me that we always have the foreign kids that are in no rush to get over here. The college game itself is a big adjustment, and moving to the other side of the world has to make it an even bigger challenge. Getting over here in August leaves almost no time to adjust to life in America, let alone develop chemistry with the team and earn the coaches' trust.

If Alexis doesn't get his eligibility reinstated we are in desperate need of big man depth and I don't see any way we get it from this kid. Obviously this is all just discussion about this season. Kid could be good down the line, I have no clue. With the portal how it is now, anything past this season is barely worth worrying about for me.

It’s not their fault, it’s paper work usually.

Now a judge in Colorado has certified the entire ‘22-23 class as a class (ha!) and issued an injunction making all of them eligible for a 5th year.  I didn’t read it but I am assuming they are in the portal too. I could see this one actually getting overturned on appeal based on the class certification, but I don’t have much of a clue about that aspect.

I've posted this elsewhere, but the Tennessee judge also ordered a special transfer portal for the players who sued in Tennessee... I can't imagine that players from other suits who have been granted the same eligibility to play would not be able to use the transfer portal from the Tennessee case.

Myles, who heard motion arguments July 22, also ordered that the transfer portal open at noon Monday until 8 a.m. on Aug. 10 for any player wanting to enter and schools wanting to reach out.

An interesting nugget stemming from today’s class-wide preliminary injunction… Five 2026 NBA Draft 2nd round picks that meet the eligibility criteria remain unsigned: Richie Saunders,Tyler Nickel, Braden Smith, Dillon Mitchell, Lajae Jones

This is along the lines of what I’ve been saying.  Sam Alexis is a great piece, without question and a need but there are some legitimate program changers that will be out there and available.  It’ll be just another chance to separate oneself on talent again. So although we improve, in the scheme of things if 25-30 teams improve more, we haven’t made up any ground despite the way it feels.

I agree. Have to admit though that while i think Sam would give us some back up depth in the middle he always seemed to me to be undersized and did not necessarily make up for that with tremendous athleticism. Better than that guy from overseas that I have already forgotten about though.

Yep.  I like him though. I think he helps. However, The amount of talent in college basketball is likely going to be better/than ever before.

The reasons for it are.

Nil Based

1. 2nd round picks come back to college

2. TOP players from the class ahead are reclassing to get money even if it means 2 years in college before entering draft.

3. We’ve become the best option for the best Euro/foriegn players based on pay.

Then you add the new 5 for 5 rules/similar to the Covid year plus a vastly increased payday.

Gonna be an incredibly stacked year for talent. And then going forward.

Comparing rosters this year to previous years isn’t an apple to apple comparison.

With the covid year haven’t we had this same situation for the past few years?

Not exactly but to a degree.  The NIL figures have skyrocketed so much that it’s drawing the best players from every pool of player.  Each year this percentage has risen.  Ballo’s year at 1 million for a center players still had lots of options. Now with Top centers and some point guards drawing 4-6m it’s surpassing all available options by so much players are fighting their way in.   With that, in addition to 5 years we are at a peak.

Not sure I’m completely with you here. I like Alexis as a piece for this particular team because he raises your ceiling a little but he raises your floor a lot. Are there more talented dudes, sure, but the players who’ve suddenly popped up, be it Smith or Saunders or Hall or Mitchell are good players but there’s a reason they’re available. If somebody’s gonna throw 7 million at Braden Smith he better give them Natty aspirations and if he does then they already had final 4 aspirations because he’s not option 1 who transforms a ceiling. He’s a really great force multiplier.  But you win Natty’s with NBA guys and none of these guys are NBA guys or they’d be NBA guys. I’m not saying I wouldn’t take any of them. I’d love to have Mitchell. But he’s option 3 on a good team including probably this one and I don’t think that’s worth the jack that an overheated market is about to throw at him. These kids are like the top 70ish high schools of the preportal era who had nice offer lists but didn’t sign in the fall and by spring elite schools with open roster spots would offer them when they hadn’t offered them 6 months before. Smith and Dent are better than that, but these other guys aren’t. They are straight up being inflated because of a combination of name recognition and timing.

If TKR hasn’t signed, they could theoretically bring back Smith, Loyer and TKR and run it back one more time.

Good thing Purdue doesn’t have that type of money.

Kaufmann-Renn redshirted so is not in the same boat.

I would not be surprised to see Smith and Loyer try and come back somewhere though, even if not Purdue

Ah…I didn’t realize that. He better hire a good attorney!

Smith probably just got some extra leverage in contract negotiations.

Loyer coming back seems like a no-brainer.

Loyer and Smith coming back has been living rent-free in my head for awhile, but since the draft, I don't see Smith returning. The Pacers traded into the draft specifically to get him; they aren't going to let Purdue make him a better deal.

Kaufmann-Renn is done. He had his 5 years. I know he didn't play the first one, but that wasn't because he was hurt, it was because Painter didn't play him.
