Some of you may have noticed on social media the hoosiers hosted several high school coaches yesterday (to observe practice). I got a quick update from someone who watched. 

-Juwan didn’t practice due to a non-serious leg injury

-Phinisee is pushing Green for starting PG role

-Deron seems to be moving well but won’t be ready to play serious minutes for a while.

-Justin Smith is going to have a big year

-the coach also didn’t love Romeo’s intensity level.

-he also said we are deep at wing/forward (not news to anyone)

Nothing groundbreaking. I think this is continued good news on Phinisee.

Damn straight that’s good news on Phinisee; I already know that DeVonte is talented but volatile; if Rob is just as good before his first game, then Rob is gonna be really good.

With a faster than expected rise of Phinisee, does Al see less minutes? Or does he primarily play backup at 2 guard this year? He might be better suited for that role anyway.

I had a chance to watch a practice last week and even though I am optimistic about the upcoming season I was not overly impressed with anyone.

Archie talked to us after and even he thought it was a bad practice but it was the first time many had run full court. Several were also fighting colds.

Phinisee did seem close to Green but green did not really look that much different than last year. It is good that someone now can push Green in practice. Rob seemed quicker than I expected and his outside shot for me is better than Greens.

Evan F looks to have a smooth shot. He also had some nice low post moves but I think his outside shot will be a really nice asset in some games.

Hunter seemed a little stiff at times but when the started to scrimmage he was a quick and willing shooter and hit several mid range shots.

Romeo was good and you could feel that had this been a game he would have been ready to go harder. Good from about anywhere.

I asked Archie about Derons timing as I noticed he did not do any of the full court work. Archie thought he would be able to do more and more in the upcoming weeks but he did say that deron would have to then work on dropping weight.

Morgan took more outside shots but was not hitting. In fact most guys did not hit well from 3 to be noteworthy except perhaps Evan F.

It was cool to be there but my take away was less on how they played but on how Archie was not impressed. Good to have someone there who is not impressed easily.

Thanks for sharing 8bucks. I think many people are undervaluing Fitzner but I think he is going to have a BIG impact on this team. He's gonna get A LOT of shots off the pick and pop and it's gonna be tough for other bigs to guard him outside. His shooting is gonna force bigs to the outside and going to open up the lane for Romeo and other guards to get the rim with ease. People questioned me when I said I think Rob should start instead of Green bc people weren't impressed with him at the HH Hysteria lol. Rob is an old school under control PG who looks for others first and won't make many boneheaded mistakes like we've seen with Green. This team doesn't need a "playmaker" at point bc we actually have shooters this year and we just need someone to make smart decisions with the ball like Rob. I watched him a lot in HS and he is simply a poor man's Yogi without the crazy quickness. He can score/shoot if he needs to but he knows his role is to get others the ball and make the right play...something Green had trouble with last year. My problem with Green is that he is all about the high risk-reward plays...last year he almost had to bc our outside shot was so ineffective but that shouldn't be the case this year with Fitz and Romeo. Hope Green proves me wrong and has improved a ton for the sake of the team but I'm not getting my hopes up...I strongly believe Rob will be our starting PG and get a majority of the minutes running the show come B1G play.

This tells me Green hasn’t progressed more than Rob has excelled. Romeo and Juwan both need to stay healthy all year and both aren’t built as bruisers so I’m not concerned on effort in practice with those two. Romeo needs to get us 25 ppg and Juwan 17 & 9 if we’re gonna have the kind of season we hope to have. The others are earning PT now in practice and because shooting will be a premium;  Al & Green may be on the outside and Damezi & Hunter could get those wing minutes. Both are better shooters/ scorers also. Green has potential but takes horrible shots and tries to make too flashy passes combined with inconsistencies we cannot have at point.

Yeah as you said, panic off of one practice isn’t necessary.

Archie will motivate using the bench this year.

It’s going to be magical.

I have the most confidence in Fitzner, Juwan, McBob and Romeo.

I’m taking the wait and see approach to Green, Durham, Smith.

So so so many other pieces that can be good and useful. Race, Phinisee, Hunter, Clifton, and others.


Im ready to see some basketball and hope Archie is right that shooting has improved because it was his focus in the off season and it’s our biggest need.

That was our takeaway as well - our depth. Still need our top guys to play like top guys but it could be though getting everyone else minutes.

Right there with you with being discouraged until Archie spoke. Didn't completely resolve that discouragement, but knowing that he knows was enough to help calm some of those fears. I was also there (and from the looks of that picture you were almost right over my shoulder lol) and spent some time focusing on Clifton. You could tell he was much more with it this year than last, and was looking for contact down low. I'm still not sure how he will fit into the rotation, but having the willingness (and the body) to bang should earn him some minutes.

Right there with you with being discouraged until Archie spoke. Didn't completely resolve that discouragement, but knowing that he knows was enough to help calm some of those fears. I was also there (and from the looks of that picture you were almost right over my shoulder lol) and spent some time focusing on Clifton. You could tell he was much more with it this year than last, and was looking for contact down low. I'm still not sure how he will fit into the rotation, but having the willingness (and the body) to bang should earn him some minutes.

Agreed. Was very surprised to see that given it was only a practice.

Agree.  I expect more like 15-18.  If we have to get 25 from him, we're in trouble because it means our shooting hasn't improved over last season.

Agree. Gordon played something like 35mpg and Sampson ran virtually everything through him. No chance CAM does either of those.
