Purdue picking steam, 5 predictions from various analysts. Can not seem to find the guard for this class although I am not worried because of the strength of the two 5 stars.

If Franklin has trouble seeing where his playing time comes from, he won't come here. Purdue can promise lots of minutes and possibly even a starting spot. Overcoming that will be a tough sell.

Struggled recruiting guards? Seems they have recruited guards just fine. They were in the top 3 out an out of state 5 star. Carton just chose another school but IU recruited him well enough that some scouts think they were right there for his commitment. Top 3 for a 4 star in-state kid that has yet to decide has hasn’t even done any officials to his top 3 yet. Just made the top 5 for an 4 star out of state player that was hurt last year and most scouts think he will bump up in rankings. Struggled getting Lewis on campus? Good luck getting him out of the South plus he will be reclassifying today to the 2018 class anyway (no room for 2018 for IU). Struggling with Newman? We IU got him on campus for an unofficial and offered. Still a lot of time in his recruitment. By struggling you mean no commitments before Aug 10, 2018 I’m guessing. Still got 3 months or so until the early signing period anyway. I don’t need to face anything my opinion is IU hasn’t struggled recruiting guards in this class

I’m going to preface this with I love Archie’s recruiting so far and I think he has a great way of going about it. He brought in an amazing 2018 class and I have no doubt he’ll do the same with the 2019 class.

HOWEVER, I agree with gradman to an extent. It’s great to reach the top 3 or 5 of a recruit’s list, but we need to land someone sooner or later. It feels like some are taking a Purdue fans mentality because that happens to them quite a bit. 

I acknowledge that there are visits coming up, but it’s reasonable to think that we aren’t leaders for any of our guard prospects right now. It’s strange to me because I would think most of these guys would want to visit a program like ours. Romeo is gone next year and that should open up ample playing time for the more elite prospects, but most of them aren’t even willing to visit us.

Snow has said something similar in that it’s reasonable to be concerned about our guard prospects at this point in time. Things can definitely change, it’s just strange to me that we aren’t making headway with the more elite guards.

I’m confident in Archie and the staff, but also concerned to some degree.

I don’t know. Time will tell if we struggled recruiting guards or not.

We tried Cole Anthony, Jalen Lecque, Tre Mann, Jahmius Ramsey, Kira Lewis and DJ Carton at five star and high 4 star. We made it close with Carton but in the end it means nothing. Maybe we still have a shot with Ramsey but unlikely.

Didn’t make the cut with Anthony Harris as a middle 4 star. We made top 5 for Bouknight who is a middle 4 star. Maybe we still have a go here.

Yes, we are still alive with Franklin, Newman who are lower rated 4 stars. Both are fine players. Possibly even great players but not our top targets and we haven’t landed either of them.

I think it’s fair to say we have struggled recruiting guards IF your expectations are for Indiana to recruit like the BlueBloods.

Still too much time to see what happens though. But it’s not been too pretty. I think Franklin or Newman are good pieces if we get a Brooks and/or TJD to go with.

I agree we sound like Cub fans. Yay, we made the top 3 or top 5. Now I also will say this is not on the staff at all, they are doing everything they can. I will also say I haven't been enthused with the guards in the 19 class. I think we land a couple guard but no one was going to be doing backflips about. But when we get TJD and KB than any guards to go along with those two will look better.

That seems to be the selling point.

I imagine them Selling Juwans spot to TJD and Romeo’s spot to Brooks.

I always have envisioned recruiting like this. It’s most logical and easiest to compartmentalize.

People say we can sell Romeo’s spot to a guard , but it is my belief that is being sold to Brooks.

Any guard we get will be competing with Phinisee, Durham, and a senior Green. If Green, Durham, and Phinisee improve as expected we don’t need a star over them. It’s much harder to sell.

NOW, if we don’t get Brooks or some other Star in the Romeo spot then it is a major recruiting mishap. Super easy sell imo.

Need to replace 2 starters and add depth imo.

So, are we struggling with guards? Yep. Will it matter in the end? Depends on The other spots we fill.

Facts are facts and the the facts say that IU’s staff have prioritized wings and bigs for this cycle. The staff made a decision right or wrong that guards were not a priority. They have been playing catch-up on guards because well they have been focused on the 2 non guard in-state top 20 kids. In recruiting you can’t have it all. When Ohio st and Holtmann was 4 deep at a non shoe event they made it clear Carton was their top priority. Archie was watching TJD and Brooks at the time. Go back and look at when the wings and bigs in 2019 got their IU offer. Now go back and look at when the guards of 2019 class got an offer.

I would never celebrate being Top 3 or 5. But I think it’s equally silly to get upset with the staff when another team wins a recruitment and if you look objectively it’s a better opportunity for the kid. 

If Green and Al are as improved as we have heard combined with a soph Phinisee

Playing time is going to be competitive. Throw into the mix Brooks and Hunter who want to develop their guard skills. There’s a lot of uncertainty at this position for these guys. We can’t guarantee a starting role. Hell we can’t even guarantee first off the bench
