Miller has always been a defensive-focused coach, and I think we'll be better there than we have been. (I haven't heard him mention deflections once) Our guards (Newkirk and Johnson) should be able to score their share because senior guards generally do and both are capable, but after them, we have a world of unknown and inconsistency. How will Hartman fit? Can Morgan increase his production? What about Davis and all of his work and lost weight? Who comes off the bench to produce? I still think 17-19 wins would be a good season for this group. More, and i will feel like they over-achieved. Nothing against anyone; just where we are. Stuhoo and Class of '66 Old Fart 2 Quote

If people have reasonable expectations it'll be a very enjoyable year. Given our far more difficult schedule than last year, 18-20 wins with eight or nine of them conference wins would be just ducky! mdn82 Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 My biggest thing this year is minimizing the highs and lows. By that I mean the 25-7 run followed by the other team going on a 14-5 run. This would happen most every game. Also I would like us to be improving as the season moves on. Wins and losses will come this year. ElectricBoogaloo Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 40 minutes ago, Stuhoo said: I know you're not agreeing with the predictions Boogaloo, but I can't even see how these predictions can logically be made. Last year we were tied for tenth in the conference with 7 wins (+1 B1G tourney win), and had 18 total wins. But, to say we lost three starters to the NBA is a little deceptive because we didn't have OG, the best of those NBA-bound players, for a good portion of the season. When OG went down, we were 13-8, 2-3 in conference; on our way to limping into the NCAA tourney. Even at our worst, with no OG or Hartman, we thereafter won six more conference games. Our train wreck end of season version (post-OG, no Hartman, Morgan also missing multiple games, Crean's matador defense fully in place) went 6-8 in conference. Do they really think that losing Bryant, Blackmon, and Crean, and gaining Archie, a healthy Hartman, three potentially helpful freshman, and adding a year of experience in a watered down B1G equals a lesser performance than last year? I cannot imagine that will be the case. I cannot imagine that, unless we are truly decimated by injuries, we will finish worse than about eighth/ninth in conference. And, I could see us just as easily hovering around ten or eleven conference wins. 26 minutes ago, Stuhoo said: Sez you! I think we will have a rollercoaster year, but we we'll be better than Rutgers, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio State, Wisconsin, maybe Penn State, and maybe a few others. Wisconsin is returning the outstanding Ethan Happ, and ... a few guys that got about ten minutes per game off the bench. That's it! Are we that sure that Gard is that much better a coach than Archie now that all four of the returning starters from the Bo era have left Gard's side? Because Wisconsin is sure as heck less talented than us. Past performance is a reasonable predictor of future results ONLY IF the variables aren't completely altered. I'm not agreeing with the bottom barrel predictions but I don't think we'll be top 5 or anything. I think all those programs in bold above are ones we can surpass this year with the exception of Wisconsin. I know Wiscy lost a lot so we'll see. To me, Wisconsin bball is like life in Jurassic Park - it finds a way. ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote

Thank You Stuhoo.Couldn't agree more.Last year's squad did a major tank job the last 1/3 of the season with the exception of a couple guys. RoJo was done with Crean and wouldn't have veen back had he not been let go.Green couldnt play for him either.I look for some newly energized play from these guys and some major contributions from our frosh. 10th seems low to me.Sent from my LGL41C using BtownBanners mobile app Iugradman, Stuhoo and ALASKA HOOSIER 3 Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Just play defense like we care. Our talent isn't major league but we have guys. With heart and direction we should be competitive. Imho Archie has his work cut out for him this year and next year. This year we are experienced with moderate talent. Recently I went back and watched many of those games again on the BTN app (yep I would rather watch old college basketball games then the nfl). Many will say out coached in most of them but for me it was the every one involved. Looking back there were plenty of games in a single possession game at the end where a turnover where they didn’t even get a chance at a shot. On the other side of that while watching some of these older games when our offense was going what a joy to watch again (Illinois game where they hit 19 threes). I know we will continue to lose some games to teams that we should beat I’m hoping this coaching staff can limit the number of them. "We work on defense more than anything, by quite a margin. We've worked on this defense more than any defense I've been involved with in my life. I've already learned so much. It's the primary focus, because defense travels to every game. Offense comes and goes. We're not always going to make shots at the same rate. But we can always pack our defense with us. We've got to make sure we're up to par on that every single time we take the floor." "We've been a team that has had high turnovers in the past," Jager acknowledged. "Now we have turnover limits for each squad in each practice, and if you go beyond that, you're running for each and every single turnover past that limit. It's hard on us but good for us at the same time." Ahhh music to my ears. ALASKA HOOSIER, MemphisHoosier, Jam and 13 others 16 Quote

I'm not sure that this was the point that you were making, but that line above jarred my thinking a bit as to a major problem with IU's defense under Crean: Does it seem to y'all that Crean spent A LOT of defensive planning and energy focused on how to out-think/game-plan against the other team's offense, instead of building his own defensive philosophy? I think back to things like Yogi chasing Stauskas, the gadget man and zone head-scratching switches to counter the other team's personnel, and it seems quite apparent. In contrast, Crean's offenses were for the most part very successful, and were so quite possibly because he was good at developing an offense that was his own, and daring even good defenses to deal with it. mamasa, sabbett4, MemphisHoosier and 5 others 8 Quote

I always got the impression that Creans team viewed defense as the other teams chance to score versus their chance to get a stop. I wouldn't say that Crean was that good with offense. Disciplined smart teams shut it down pretty much on demand. Iugradman, Hoosierfan2017 and thebigweave 3 Quote
