I never thought I'd actually want IU to hire John Groce...but I'll take him as an assistant.

Exactly. I was worried he might've been our next head coach at one point a couple of weeks ago.

I'm so getting my hopes up on John Groce like I did with Billy Donovan, which probably means we'll get left at the altar all over again.  He would be such a solid addition to the staff for hopefully a few years to lock up the Midwest.

All eyes to the Akron job now, hopefully they take a chance on an up-and-comer rather than Groce.

I would Groce has had 2 head coaching gigs and hasn't rocked either

Him and Miller know each other he will want to work for a year.  Plus a few People have brought it up

I know that they know each other. Other than that there is nothing. I don't see why people are getting their hopes up again. Didn't we learn anything from the Billy D situation. FWIW former head coaches are more likely to get another job staying the course of waiting around instead of jumping in as an assistant.

Not too many guys at a high level program like Illinois get fired then become an assistant and get another good job. He will either take a opening now or wait until next year.

I don't understand this sentiment that Flint and Groce are recruiters, and Archie would need to add an X's and O's guy. Flint has been a head coach for close to 20 years and Groce for 7. Especially Flint, but neither gets that long as an HC just being a recruiter.

I agree and think this is why Ostrom is coming in. He'll be our main recruiter

I don't know if all teams do it this way but often the assistant coaches are responsible for scouting and developing the game plan for upcoming opponents. These rotate among the assistants so you need to have a staff that has both a knowledge of the game as well as an ability to recruit.

Not a big Groce fan on a personal level. He taught at my high school in the 90's and was asked to resign because he was sleeping with a student (a senior who was 18....so not illegal, but highly unethical)

I don't believe this for a second.

Looks like he went from being a player to an assistant coach at Taylor. When was he at a HS?
