I have asked Jeff Eisenberg and Jon Rothstein on twitter the last few days who IU could realistically get. I know it just media members but both these guys are very honest and I respect both their opinions. Consensus is Tony Bennett, Scott Drew whether people want him or not and Dana Altman are our top tier according to them and mentioned they all seem to want to stay put so Chris Mack or Archie Miller was the two names that were said to be the best that we could get right now. I want Archie Miller almost as bad as anyone else so it isn't disappointing for me but it may be for some of you. Also Few is considered a pipe dream in their opinion as well.

I'm with you; won't be disappointed at all with Archie Miller.  He's at the top of my list, after the pipe dreams of BS and BD.  I actually like Tony Bennett a lot, but don't want any part of Scott Drew.

I would LOVE Archie Miller. This is assuming Stevens and Donovan decline the offer. I think the three current college coaches IU should target are Bennett, Miller and Marshall. But I would definitely take Bennett or Miller before Marshall. I'm torn on Bennett and Archie though

Crean couldn't win the IHSAA 4A tournament.

They also said trump could never win the election. You never know unless you try.

don't see IU going anywhere near Drew after the way the Sampson tenure turned out. Maybe brother Bryce a year from now, though. Altman turns 59 this summer, so I doubt IU would be interested in him either.

Stevens and Donovan are the absolute first calls. After that, Tony Bennett and Archie Miller

I'm not a Bennett fan.  There is a certain mold of defense first coaches/programs that produce really good in-season results, but flop in the post season.  Purdue, Wisconsin, Bennett (by way of his father at Wisky) at WSU and now Virginia. I realize that we crave D at IU, but in my humble opinion Bennett might swing us to far in that direction.  I don't want IU to settle for being the conference spoiler/boiler/badger, where success is measured by denying more talented teams of championships, versus winning them ourselves.

I agree with the point of this post, not sure I agree that Bennett is that but he could.  I think a lot of people are putting too much stock in this or that stat, this or that ken pom ranking, this or that metric.

I simply want a coach who coaches players up to or beyond their ability consistently, knows how to fit his system to the players he has, makes the in game adjustments needed, causes other teams to match up to us, and finally is consistently competing at the top of the conference and top 25 of the NCAA.

In other words, I want them to pass the eye test.

This gives us a chance to make a run each year even if they get bounced earlier than they should occasionally.  Upsets will happen and the deep runs will even this out but at least to be consistently in the conversation each year will help ensure deeper runs happen more frequently.   The more frequent you can get deeper runs, the better chances at banner 6, 7 and 8.

Some of the stats being thrown around are great but give me the eye test over stats any day if I am forced to choose between the two.  Use both in conjunction and then you have something but I just feel too many people are using analytics in too much of a vacuum.

Virginia has flopped in the NCAA tournament. That is the biggest thing when it comes to NCAA basketball. There is nothing more important than the NCAA tournament. But I do think Tony Bennett would be a great hire. I think he's had a lot of success with average to above average players. At IU, he would get top notch players. And he would be able to recruit the hell out of this state. That would translate to postseason success imo

I think it's good coaching doing what he has with the talent given. D is effort and energy and some coaching. Easier yield than offense. Give Wisconsin, Virginia, and heck, Painter (re:Swanigan) top end talent and the post season results might reflect better.

These schools consistently play against more talented teams. IU's platform should somewhat level the recruiting imbalance.

Idk man I don't really crave D
