AZ Hoosier Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 How does a defending B1G champion shoot 54.5% from the floor (including 53.8% from the 3 point line) and LOSE BY 30 POINTS? IMO, it has a lot to do with coaching and lack of defense (proof is that UM shot 63.3% from the floor and 55% from the 3 point line) ... pathetic... I am sick of this cr@p... time for Crean to pack up and leave... ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote
Yogi's Picnic Basket Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Crean has to go. We don't need to say why anymore or give reasons, it just needs to happen. As rare as it is I wouldn't even be upset if it happened tomorrow and gave Buckley the reigns until the end of the year. Ideally we would like to fire him now or in April so we can get rolling with a new coach. However, I think the injury to OG and Collin will give Glass an excuse to keep him on. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app The buyout is not the issue and it hasnt been. His buyout isnt paid in a lump sum. It is paid out over the duration of what the contract was for, so 3 years. Also, Crean must seek new employment to get the buyout. For each dollar he earns from his new gig, its a dollar deducted from what IU has to pay him for his buyout. 4mil over 3 years is 1.33 million a year. Crean can easily get a job paying him 1.3 million at any football school. IU can basically walk away from Crean and owe him nothing. There is no reason to wait until after the buyout drops again. This is why i think Glass will not fire Crean. He will tell him he needs to find a job asap bc he wont be back, but not make anything public. Crean then becomes the next coach at Ole Miss or Oregon st. Creans saves face and IU doesnt owe him a dime. Trish, ALASKA HOOSIER, HoosierTrav and 3 others 6 Quote

I like winning B1G titles but IU needs to send a message to its fans and the rest of the college basketball world. Your job is not safe at Indiana because you won a B1G title and got to a Sweet 16 if you fail miserably the following season. Make a change! D-Wade blowing up and taking him to a Final Four…still gets talked about 14 years after the fact. Starts off with nothing at IU, and therefore, no expectations the first season. Creek gets hurt, giving him a pass for year two (the "first three years don't count" brigade loves bringing this one up). "Four 1,000 point scorers gone" gives him another pass for an awful season. Luke Fischer transferring unexpectedly gives him another pass for having no bigs. Thomas Bryant arrives after Syracuse gets sanctioned. The weak schedule that you mentioned. OG's injury, as well as Hartman being out all year, for what that's worth. I truly never have seen a coach who got more bad breaks that turned out to benefit him in some way. While the defense is awful, the tempo Crean wants to play compounds the problem. Crean is always talking about going faster. When you go faster, you increase turnovers. Turnovers turn into easy baskets the other way and makes your defense even worse. I think he knows he isnt a good defensive coach and tries to compensate by having an offense put up big numbers shooting the 3. ALASKA HOOSIER and HoosierAloha 2 Quote

His defense is improving as well. Sent from my LGLS676 using BtownBanners mobile app I cant say Im impressed with Enfield to be honest. Its year 4 for him at USC, and he is 5-4 in conference this year. Pac12 is terrible and he already has 4 losses before February. I dont care that he beat a UCLA team that ranks as terrible as IU in defensive efficiency. UCLA is a fraud. I know nobody mentioned UCLA, just pointing out that its not that big of a win, imo. He has also never won his conference, ever. He had one magical run and took a pay raise to a terrible team, and in 4 years made them a middle of the pack conference team. Im big on defensive efficiency bc of the trends of the past national champions. Since 2002 every champ has been ranked in the top 21 in defensive efficiency. Here are Enfields team defensive stats: 2017: 86th 2016: 82nd 2015: 94th 2014: 112th 2013: 100th (sweet 16 FGCU) 2012: 245th looks like Crean 2.0 to me. PASS. Yogi's Picnic Basket Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 You really expected him to have top defenses coaching st FGCU lol? USC was horrible when he took over honestly. He barely had a legitimate player on his roster. He was in a similar spot as Crean without the sanctions, but Crean also had the advantage of IU and not USC. Besides OJ Mayo when in the last 20 years has that program had a buzz? He has improved each year at USC and this year he has played without Bennie Boatright who is a NBA prospect. Was actually in the first round in most mocks at the start of the year. He turned him into a prospect as well as Metu. He lose two guys who foolishly entered the draft last year too. Now that he has established himself he has been recruiting pretty good against Oregon, Zona and UCLA 3 very popular teams on the west coast. UNLV before this year got great talent as well. Name one program that isn't even considered a mid major who consistently has top defenses in the country. He made the tourney last year when no one expected him too and is gonna do it again this year. The Pac 12 puts better NBA players up than the B1G has recently. Zona alone is pretty close lol. The bottom of it sucks very badly but Utah, Zona and Oregon have been very good programs as well as Colorado and UCLA on and off. Imagine if our defense moved up 40-60 spots in those years. With less turnovers as well. Saying he isn't doing a great job there is ridiculous. I get that he isn't our best choice, but we could do a lot worse. Remember one thing....if Crean passed on us in 08 our next interview was Brad Brownell. Sent from my LGLS676 using BtownBanners mobile app Quote
Yogi's Picnic Basket Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 To add onto that he was the Bucks shooting coach during Ray Allen being there and received credit for it as well. He also was an assistant for the Celtics for a few years and then with FSU where he was the lead recruiter for SIX nba players. He also helped mold Leonard Hamilton's defense which is always good. Probably explains why even with a defense ranked in the 80's last year USC was top 20 in blocks. His offensive numbers were all in the top 25 as well last year with having 4 4 stars on his entire roster. He has Charles O'Bannon coming in next year as well as Derryck Thornton. If Boatright and Metu both return he will have 4 legitmate NBA players next year. This guy is gonna be very good. Crazy he is only two years younger than Thad Matta lol. It doesn't hurt his wife would be our biggest cheerleader either. Sent from my LGLS676 using BtownBanners mobile app HoosierTrav 1 Quote

bleedhoosier Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 So what is the norm for shorter term contracts and head coaching? I used to be in the "don't trade Crean for a lateral higher" crowd but at some point, the fanbase and program loses some luster. Can we rip Holman and offer him 3 years with a promise talk of extension at the end of year 2? Is that too short for "recruiting confidence"?He is walking into a "clean" program, ripe with potential, the name, the facilities, a crazed fanbase and a recruiting bed that is nearly on fire in his back yard. Most of those guys have done it more than once during that time. So yes, even at FGCU he could of had a top 20 defense, if he was a quality defensive coach....Which he is not. Offense is for show, but defense wins championships. You are using injuries and going pro as excuses, sounds like Crean to me. Or to use someone in the Pac12, sounds like Lorenzo Romar 2.0....yikes. Enfield is not the answer, he is fools gold. But Im glad you enjoy watching USC basketball. There are other programs I enjoy watching bc of style of play, but that doesnt mean I think their coaches are good enough to be at IU. Quote
