TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Didn't CTC cut out cursing? I'd hope he's not dropping bombs on the sideline. Don't care how many bombs either of them drop behind closed doors.

If you don't curse often, cursing carries a big impact and can be used effectively at times. If you are a sewer mouth, cursing loses all impact. I am a coach and parent. When I decide to curse, in either instance, I believe it carries weight. I'd rather not have staff spouting f bombs all over but if Crean used some well timed F bombs towards refs or players to get them to wake up, I'd be ALL for it!

and not "F you"s but I like some "WTF was that"s the Izzo sense. If you can command respect and attention without cursing all the better but I can handle a head coach using it with purpose. Subtle nuances.

I read it as to many people yelling orders and it is confusing the players. We need one or to calm calculated leaders on the bench and let the fans do the yelling clapping and cheering.

This. I sat a few rows behind the bench at Northwestern last year. All my thoughts and fears about our lack of D were galvanized. It was chaos on the bench, from the top on down. During one TO I heard Buckley and McClain tell Rob two entirely different things. Out of the TO Rob gets caught in no man's land as we weren't even in a defense that pertained to what the coaches were yammering about.  Demps waltzes in for a layup.

Regarding Sterling's piece...

1) That's an issue 15 years and 3 coaches in the making. Further reason why Stevens should be options 1, 2, and 3.

2) I agree.

3) I'm curious as to how many players the Duke's and pUKe's of the world recruit and offer compared to Crean and other power 5 schools.

4) Man, I could've bought myself a useless banner at a reasonable price. (Wonder if Crean was the winning bidder)

5) A case of 'Damned if you do, damned if you don't.' If you tout your team can win the B1G or go deep in the tourney and they come up short, you're overselling. If you give the team low expectations and they do so, then you're not giving the team confidence and the encouragement to succeed.

6) BINGO! There's easily 5-6 conferences that IU shouldn't even consider scheduling unless its contractually part of a pre-season tournament or the NCAA's. Best case scenario, if a team we play crushes their conference; maybe they're in the 150-200 range. The worst teams in conferences like the Horizon, Missouri Valley, and MAC end up being higher than most of the crap de la crap.

7) Whatever. Maybe make him wear a sportscoat so he doesn't look like an injured or academic ineligible player.

8) Ties in with #3.

If something *does* happen and the roster/recruiting gets blown up for a little bit, Juwan, OG, and Rob will be a fun trio to have around during any rebuild that will happen. Juwan has already improved so much in a couple months.

@KentSterling: Indiana Morning Sports List – Top 8 things that need to change for IU Basketball to become successful. #iubbhttps://t.co/7lGqOkN8hm
#3 has been my point for a long while.
#4 is sadly funny.
#7 has sparked a big Twitter debate.
THOUGHTS?

On #7 I have been wondering since the ND game why in the hell was Anderson yelling at the players like he was coaching them during the game. I'm still confused. I'm wondering has ever a strength and conditioning coach ever done that in the history of basketball. Leave it up to Crean to come up with something else that doesn't make sense. What do you expect from a guy who switches defenses mid possessions.

i 100% agree. The strength coach has no business being on the bench during games (why?) and if he is he shouldn't be coaching the players, talking to them in timeouts, pulling them aside. I have noticed this over and over and it makes zero cents.

If he is there to cheer then have him sit with the cheerleaders, this is Indiana and don't need flavor flav on our bench.

Players are already confused enough, don't need another guy with even less basketball knowledge in their ears during the game

Sterling nailed it 1-7

Je'Ney Jackson would do the same things people are complaining about with the new S&C coach. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now but when the head coach isn't up to pr, then someone has to try something.

I'm apparently in the minority view here. I think Sterling vastly over sells the importance of this but his premise is correct. I think staff on sidelines should have a certain level of professionalism. When the SC coach is getting warned by officials to calm down it's not a great look. Twitter quoted him dropping F bombs during the live game feed. Also not a good look. idk, I like his enthusiasm on one hand but it seemed over the top for a coach and unprofessional.

I guess I am the boring police though, so who knows.

Agree.  This is a "bigger picture" issue.  No, it's not a big deal if the SC coach sits on the bench, and by itself it's kinda' dumb, but that's not the point.  It's that he's completely over the top animated and vocal.  We ALL root for the kids and he has a vested interest; but on the team bench is simply not the place for his antics because it makes Indiana look cheap.  We expect to do great things on the floor, don't we?   We have to have professionalism on the bench.  We have to set an example rather than act like a kid.  Don't we act like we've been there before?  Don't we worry about minor celebrations behind closed doors once the game is over and we can talk about what we've really accomplished?  He clearly loves the kids and loves when they do well.  And that's GREAT!  It's terrific to have allies.  But tone it down or sit behind the bench with the fans.

Wait, so should Crean not curse like he has pledged to and doesn't, curse like Bob Knight, or somewhere in the middle to be best effective? I've seen it all here. Sterling knows how to pander to this fan base for sure.

Bottom line is nobody would care either way if Crean was a better coach. Crean has turned me off so badly I didn't even realize there was an IU game on tonight until after it had started.
