TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

I don't think Crean is gone until after the season. We have ND and cupcakes until conference play starts, and we have a favorable conference slate considering a lot of our big ones are at home. This team is a mess, but AH appears to be worth 15 points to them, and they do play with more intensity and cohesion at home.

We start Big10 play @Rutgers and @Nebraska. Then we get some bigger boys, but they're at home. We're going to get killed in Madison and East Lansing, but I have a feeling we could steal one against UM in Ann Arbor. For whatever reason Crean has Beilein's number. We only play MSU once, get Maryland at home, can beat Illinois in both places, could possibly split with Purdue, can play @Minnesota, may compete @Iowa, should beat Penn State, should be NW, hopefully sweep Nebraska, etc.

It's a very favorable schedule that other than @UW and @MSU gives us a lot of our tougher games at home, such as Maryland and OSU who we both only play once. I know this team looks helpless, but if the Vonleh team beat #3 Wisconsin, I wouldn't put it past them to steal a few. Unless we have a final stretch collapse ala Bruce Weber's last season in Champaign, Crean will finish the season.

Thankfully we only have 1 game against Purdue this season.

I'm sure there are plenty of reasons Brad Stevens shouldn't, but simply put, if he wins a nat'l championship he becomes God or some lesser known deity or immortal. The adulation that would flow forth from the Hoosier fan base would ensconce him in our warm welcoming embrace. Err...plus money and job security into 2025.

I honestly don't see Brad Stevens even considering to come here. Why on earth would he?

we can pay him more. Fewer games, shorter season, near home, can "teach" basketball. NBA careers are short term for most. By stacking the odds in recruiting, it's easier to NOT get fired in NCAA's. Many college coaches have had chances to go to NBA and haven't for the reasons I listed.

I'm just saying 8 years is plenty of time to know that Crean is not the guy leading us back to the promise land. If he was smart enough he would negotiate a settlement and get out of town but we know that won't happen

Y'all get a kick out of this. Literally had a debate with someone today because they said Brad Stevens wouldn't succeed in the B1G........needless to say he has no clue what he is talking about lol

A popular line from the pro-Crean camp when this argument came up last year was that Stevens wouldn't succeed here because he isn't "flashy" enough. They then proceeded to dismiss his Horizon League success because the teams he had there would have lost a lot more games if they had played in the Big Ten. Some of them even went as far as saying that if Crean went elsewhere, he'd turn that program into a powerhouse and we'd instantly regret it.

If I had to make a gun-to-head prediction, I doubt Stevens ever comes here. Things would really have to turn sour in Boston for him to leave that behind. They have a bunch of first-round picks (thanks to the stupidity of the Brooklyn Nets) and all he has to do there is coach. I'm not an insider by any means, but I remember hearing that a big reason he left Butler when he did was because he wasn't happy about their move to a bigger conference, since it meant he would have to recruit against high major coaches and he wanted no part of that because of all the cheating that goes on. I don't think it would be difficult for him to recruit here at all (Crean has made it 100 times harder than it needs to be due to his personality and lack of results), but I think that would be the major reason he would ultimately turn the job down if offered.

Now…having said all that, I really hope we didn't bring Crean back to waste this season because we thought there was a chance we might get Stevens next spring. There are other good coaches out there who would gladly take this job and accomplish so much more. Hopefully we find one in a few months and finally cut our losses.

I was under the impression he didn't want to recruit against those other coaches because the Butler Facilities were lacking.  Where as ours are second to none.
