Post-Butler Frustration Thread

 I don't think Glass is all that concerned with winning another national championship and as a result will keep Crean here as long as he'll stay. It sucks, but it's probably the hand that we have been dealt. 

I believe I saw somewhere in this thread that CTC has two years left on contract. At what point does a short contract start to affect recruiting?

His buyout is no longer outrageous anymore though. Honestly for a mid tier team or even a team in the 3-4 range in their conference would probably love to have Crean. SMU always felt like a awesome place for Crean idk why I felt that he would work great for that particular team, but maybe he gets offered some jobs that are just a notch below us that is appealing to him. NC State would be a good place too as well. I could see him going to a B1G team if he is fired just to play us. He seems like that kinda guy. He ain't going anywhere IMO though. Glass loves him.

4 million right now to buy him out and it goes to 1 million on July 1st. We won't fire him in July that would set our program back so if it happens it won't be until after next season.

Ha Glass isn't going to fire him off back to back B1G titles and a decent chance we win this years. It was one game lol. Before Butler some on here were saying this is a Final Four team. We lose to a top 20 team and now we need to fire the coach. You guys are funny.

Bingo! If glass is at iu another 15 years crean will be at iu another 15 years. If he was not fired before last season started he wont ever be fired. He is as safe as safe can be. It stinks but its a fred glass reality and he will extend him so dont be shocked.

When I think of Crean I can't help but compare him to Tubby when he was at UK.

In his 10 seasons there he never missed the tourney, never lost in the round of 64, went to the round of 32 4x, 16 2x, 8 3x and a championship = fired.

We would be over the moon to get those results from Crean.

I don't see anyone saying he should be.  I've been as vocal against Crean as anyone, I firmly believe he'll never get back to the Final Four and I'll be shocked if he gets past the Sweet 16 because he's just not that good, and even I didn't say that.  He should've been fired before now but that's irrelevant to the discussion.

I sure as hell wouldn't give him an extension (Glass is probably working on a lifetime extension with a blank check), but I didn't say he should be fired because he's never figured out to beat a fundamental team without hoping enough low percentage shots fall.  I'm sick of losing these games because he hasn't made changes and my feelings on his offense range anywhere from hate to double hate to loathe entirely so I'd only be upset because I have absolutely zero faith in the administration to actually try and get a good coach.

It will be interesting to see how the next year and a half go. I could see this group getting stronger as the year goes on, winning the Big Ten and making an Elite 8 or even Final Four run, essentially securing a CTC extension. Or, I could see us losing to Louisville, not completely gelling and then finishing something like 3rd-4th in the Big Ten with a round of 32 exit.  

If the latter happens, and we lose TB, OG and JBJ, then finish 5th or 6th next year and lose in the 1st round, I could see Crean getting fired. 

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think they will. I think they go 14-4. 3 or 4 seed. I don't think he has the tournament success we hope. Problem is without consistent sweet 16 teams over the last 25 years I don't see Glass firing him or moving on unless there is a splash hire to be made. Or something happens behind the scenes.

I completely agree with this. This team has upside. Only one team this year won't have to worry about their bracket when the time comes. We have upside. We also have bust potential higher than most. This season should point us in a direction on his contract one way or another. That time is coming. I hope we go extreme one way or another to give definitive answers.

Without a point guard we arent going to the final four. If crean ever gets past the sweet sixeteen i will be shocked. We have not even been close in the last two sweet sixeteens. They were beat downs.But he will have another 20 years to try after freds extension that is coming.

I was thinking the same today. Short term Ive been bullish on this team but long term Ive never thought Crean takes us where we want to go. If we become middle of the pack again I can see one or both sides wanting to make a change. Things like family life change and I can even see Crean wanting to move on.

It's just always an odd spot for me when I'm trying to explain how I feel about Crean. Such a fantastic guy that will obviously run through a brick wall for his guys. The random stories about him seeing homeless people and buying them food but THEN sitting down with them and talking to them for like 30 mins. He is a giant killer most of the time (highly ranked teams), he usually has our guys playing out of their minds in Assembly Hall.. but he is also very predictable on certain matchups.

He has given much more success than we have seen in many years. So I'm grateful on one hand. On the other I want to grab him by the tie and tell him to hit the elite eight or pack his bags. Really, I would feel great about an elite eight!

3rd point - We're in that spot where we have to snag an epic hire or it is literally not worth it. In my opinion, we should just keep Crean unless the home run comes along. I don't want to trade Crean in for the same success.

I HATE that he has ruined recruiting in Indiana. Who do we have at this point? Hartman? It's atrocious and he should do whatever is in his power to right the ship. There is no reason we shouldn't have at least 25% of this team from Indiana. Why bring in a McSwain when a ton of super heady, been playing ball for 15 years, indiana obsessed, lower tier guys would probably kill for the stripes. That's

In March of 2015, I spoke with an insider from one of the other IU boards via PM. He informed me that IU reached out to Brad Stevens at the time to gauge his interest, and Stevens didn't feel the time was right. He believes IU would have pulled the trigger and let Stevens name his price. He also believes Billy Donovan was contacted as well, but Donovan was more interested in the NBA. Glass knows how important this is and didn't want to make a change just for the sake of making a change, so when his top candidates said no thanks, he elected to stay the course. 

 

Crean's contract is irrelevant, and so is his buyout. There aren't very many coaches out there right now who are interested in this job who would be a significant upgrade over Crean. It sucks, but it is what it is.
