  1. Another pick for IU. 100% on his picks with 90+ day average.

  4. "As good?" Yeah. He was. He was a far better defender as a sophomore. Also a lot bigger. He averaged more points, more rebounds, more FT attempts - and led the Big Ten in attempts and makes; had more assists, and more blocks. (granted the last two were marginal, but so were the numbers on which he declined a bit) His team improved by 2 games, his "plus/minus" was identical, and he was asked to play more minutes. He never was asked to develop a jump shot; and he drew a hell of a lot more double teams than he did his freshman year. He was never truly allowed to play out on the floor facing the basket; and he was the best mobile big man in the country. Was he as efficient as he was his freshman season? Was he utilized properly? I can make that argument. But a regression? I don't see that.

  8. I really don't agree with this at all. Both are great players. Wanting one of them for two years instead of having the other for one is definitely a legit position to take, especially when PG is a bigger position of need. I get the whole "taking over the state" perspective. I do. But what 5 star is going to come to IU because Romeo did? Most of them are independent decision makers. Romeo will only be here one year, and they won't play with him. Is there anything you can point to about their play on the court that makes Romeo that much bigger of a get than Garland?

  9. 2 years instead of 1 is not that big of a difference? Huh? IU with Freshman Zeller was ranked 15-20 once they got ranked. Sophomore Zeller made it so IU started the year at 1. We got a 1 seed. Having a 5* more than one year is a huge deal. Not following the point you are making other than Romeo is good at basketball. Won't debate that, but so is DG. Both are very, very good at basketball and will make the team they choose a lot better. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  11. I was checking out Anchor of Gold (pretty tough to find Vandy basketball fan sites)- one guy on there said he'd totally understand DG leaving, since their fan base doesn't care. All they're talking about is football. I'll keep checking for other sites...

  12. Had us #1 for the whole year yes we lost early but we were considered contenders to win that year no doubt. He also was a second team all- American and went 4th in the draft. If that's an overrated recruit then I want more overrated recruits. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  13. Anybody who was letdown had not paid attention to Dayton Basketball. I think the Billy Dovovan hype may have caused it. Sure I wanted him too but was immediately excited about the Miller hire. It's looking more and more like IU may finally have a coach that brings them to the top again. I haven't been this excited about IU basketball in 20 years. I just have a feeling Archie is about to build a monster here.

  14. Hey guys; gonna start a "Cody Zeller Importance" thread. Keep this thread Romeo-ish please!

  15. Bro in today's college basketball environment, having a 5* PG on your roster for 2 years rather than 1 is a huge, colossal difference. Especially when you give him some potential 2019 talents to play with like Watford, Hurt, Wiseman, TJD, or Brooks combined with a sophomore Anderson, Hunter, Thompson, etc.
    8 points
  16. Well, not many would argue that Cody did not have the giant freshmen to sophomore leap that we all expected or hoped for but to say he was better as a freshman is silly. He was the best player on the #1 team in the country as a sophomore and went #4 in the draft. There is zero chance freshman Cody was better than sophomore Cody. 17. The other thing Zeller did was show other top recruits Indiana was worth a look. Coach Miller would benefit as much from who might follow and continue building than he would Romeo himself. Only I think Miller could sustain it.

  19. What the hell is all this talk of who we would rather have? First off it is not OUR choice, it is their's. I want both! If we land both, then someone has to go. I don't have a problem with that. Nature of the game. How many timrs have we been in the position to pick up 2 top 10 players? Exactly! Sent from my SM-G930P using BtownBanners mobile app

  22. Pretty sure it was TIC. This whole debate is a little silly to me. Zeller was a big deal. A single player can't change a program. BUT he did for 2 years. That's all he can do. And he did it. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

  24. I mean, that doesn't really tell me anything about their games and why Romeo is so much better than Garland. And yes, having an elite point guard for multiple years on your team is a huge difference. Example: Yogi.

  30. But Hulls, Watford, and Oladipo WERE on the team when they won 12 games. Then they added Cody and won 27. I don't disagree any of the other guys weren't valuable, but Cody was by far the biggest difference. If you take him off that 2011 team, no way would we have stayed within 15 pts of Kentucky or won as many games as we did. I'd probably say 18 games would have been our max win total from that year without Zeller. Now I don't think he's on any lists of top 10 or 15 Hoosiers of all-time, because you can't really compare him to guys who won banners or got to Final 4s. But I definitely wouldn't call him overrated in any case either.

  35. I agree that Romeo is a better player in a vacuum, but we will have several players that can eat minutes at the 2 while point guard is still a big question. His height makes it more likely that he's a multi-year player so if we land him then we could potentially pitch playing with an elite point guard to Brooks/Hurt/Watford/Jackson-Davis, etc.

  36. I'll give my uneducated opinion: Anyone saying that Tre Jones's commitment to Duke was irrelevant or a Duke net-positive was either speaking in platitudes or flat-out lying. Both Darius and Tre want to be the guy with the ball in their hands; Tre claimed that spot for the Dukies. I like our odds given that I fully expect IU's Hoosier Hysteria weekend to be Darius Garland's final official visit. You think it's any coincidence that the Duke 247 predictor was the one who just flipped to IU? Darius will be in Bloomington the weekend of 10/21; he will not be Raleigh/Durham the following weekend. Vandy is a real option. But, of his final five, if he makes it onto Duke or UCLA's campus I will be more than a little surprised, and only then will I re-assess my optimism. It would also be mighty helpful if, as is widely expected, 5* pg Immanuel Quickley, who announcing tonight, pops for the dirty, stinkin' Kensucky Wildcats. If we don't sign either Darius or Romeo I'm better-than-okay and I get it, but things are already really good and could get a whole lot better.

  40. He helped legitimize the program, and was a big part of making us relevant again. He still comes back, he has a good NBA career, and is one of our success stories. He continues to be an ambassador for IU ball. This question is foolish, and a dumb thing to debate when a current local stud is considering committing.

  41. He was extremely important. We owe 2 great season largely to him. Crean floundered to capitalize on any momentum he gained. So in the long run, its a "what coulda been". Love Zeller as a player and person. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

  43. To call him an overrated recruit as a top 20 pick cause he didn't live up to impossible standards of a starved fan base makes 0 sense to me. If you have to win a title to be not overrated then I guess he was screwed from the start. All yogi did was stay 4 years he had 2 good years and 2 not great. I love Yogi one of my favorites but he didn't mean more as a recruit then Cody. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  44. Yeah, but his numbers are only part of his story. His mobility was his greatest attribute. He was never utilized as he should have been; and we absolutely contended for a title with him at Indiana. We were a #1 seed and won the Big Ten. The problem there was Crean; not Cody. The way he was used in the Syracuse game was laughable. That's on Crean, not Cody. Cody committed relatively early; and the following season was "the movement." It obviously didn't work out, but that's the only class who COULD have "flocked" to play with Cody, and it was one of the top classes in the country at the time. The guy was arguably the most dominant mobile big man in the country, and his team in 2011-2012 went from 12-20 to 27-9 without adding a whole lot more. (Though Oladipo improved a great deal....that's true) That''s exclusively on Cody because it sure as heck wasn't on Crean. All due respect, I think you're selling Zeller short and perhaps placing blame on un-reached potential on a guy 30 years younger than the man who should shoulder it.

  45. Yes I am exactly saying that. Stats back that up too. I truly hope we have another 5* staying more than one year as our chances of competing for titles improve greatly when you have talent plus experience. Not many instances of Freshman 5* title winners. There are a few for sure, but would love the combo of one and done as well as high end talent that comes back. If I have a choice of one and only one I will always take a top ten player at a premium position that could stick around more than a year. Luckily we are in on both. Fun times ahead.
