“Vandy has wins against South Carolina, LSU, Missouri and Auburn. Those are all quality teams.”

These SEC guys are all grade A clowns. Worshiping a conference the way that they do is just pathetic. The best team in the SEC got dominated by one of the worst teams in the ACC, but sure tell us more about how they’re all unbeatable juggernauts. I’d love nothing more than IU putting BTA against an SEC team in the playoff like OSU did to Tennessee last year.

Eli lost me on this one.  Late in the season like 25 teams have playoff hopes (including those who are likely in).  To start the season I don't know, maybe 40 to 45 teams have playoff hopes.  That's a lot of teams in the mix.  And this is a cut throat competition at the end of the day.

And I get this is probably just cope from getting eliminated, QB injury, etc.

Meh, I don't disagree with his quote here... To me it just sounds like a coach advocating for his peers.

I don't take his point as too few teams are in the mix but that it's unsustainable to unceremoniously can a guy like James Franklin or Mike Gundy mid-season because of this "championship or bust" mentality schools have. PSU and Ok St. haven't won a game since firing them and there's a ton of other big jobs opening this cycle... no guarantee they end up with better coaches.

And that's to say nothing of the $$ aspect with how big these contracts/buyouts are and how valuable making the CFP is.

It's all so situational though... in some cases it's time for a change anyway (Gundy, for sure) or the school is chomping at the bit for an excuse to get rid of em (LSU / Kelly).

Some places will just always have that "championship or bust" approach - LSU, UF, Auburn have been that way. But...

PSU hasn't won a title since 1986. Has their performance warranted that same approach? I don't think so, and I'm sure Franklin's peers all think he got a raw deal in the end. And they're much better positioned than other P4 openings like Ok St., Ark, VaTech, UCLA, etc.

I love the playoff format and think it's great for CFB... but do think the shorter leash for coaches is a natural byproduct of it. Some schools will probably shoot themselves in the foot chasing short-term results.

Luckily, for a change, we have a coach/admin that understands focusing on process will lead to the desired result...

I agree with him less now than when the playoff was only 4 teams. The playoffs now consist of 12 of 127 teams, just a bit under 10%.  For schools to really be in the mix to make the playoffs, they just have to be top 15 or so. Places like PSU, LSU, and Florida expect to be top 15 every year.

Those 3 schools I think wanted a change anyways. PSU made the playoffs last year but Franklin has a history of just not getting it done in big games. He'd been there for quite a while and it looked like they had peaked and were on the way back down or at best had plateaued.

I don't think most of the schools in D1 have that mentality. Before Cignetti, IU and its fans would have been happy just making bowl games more years than not.

Franklin to V Tech feels like a match up that could potentially work pretty well.

Franklin is definitely not a bad coach and V Tech seems like it could easily be a better program than it has been recently.
