Uspshoosier Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 https://twitter.com/btndaverevsine/status/676991370922455041 Puts into perspective just how good of coach he was. I won't miss him kicking iu's butt every year but as a fan of college basketball, I will miss how he coached the game IUsafety, HoosierReb01, Class of '66 Old Fart and 1 other 4 Quote
MartintheMopMan Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 https://twitter.com/btndaverevsine/status/676992716950097922 What a bizarre comparison to make. What is it supposed to mean? I suppose it shows Bo did a lot with less (and did he ever) but like, Duke also won 2 national championships in those 14 years and won one the year previous (whose burger boys may have been counted). So, in the end it says "Well, even if you have a coach who can create great players out of lower-ranked recruits, you gotta have them burger boys if you want to hang a banner". Quote
incrediboy Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I pay the proper homage to the record of Bo Ryan. His record of past success speaks for itself. Nonetheless, I predicted last summer that he needed to get out sooner rather than later before he became part of the mediocrity that would begin in Cheeseheadland this year. Not surprised that he did it. College basketball always begs the question, "What have you done for me lately?" Ryan, of course, is legendary at Wisky and could have stayed as long as he wanted. It appears he wanted no more of this team. So when does his ESPN contract start? Quote

Exactly my thought as well, I guess they're just trying to make a comparison just for comparison's sake. Quote

Popular Post Old Friend Posted December 17, 2015 Popular Post Posted December 17, 2015 I'm not sure how anyone can do anything but stand, clap and wish him well. Regardless of timing, this is a guy who always got the most from his teams, and did it in such a way I think most Indiana fans over the age of 35 can identify with. Congratulations and best wishes to one hell of a coach. ThompsonHoosier, GloryDays, Alford Bailey and 9 others 12 Quote
Dalton26 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I think the main reason Bo stepped down is to make sure the coach he wanted to replace him at least gets a chance to coach. That's what I've read too. You've gotta respect him for making sure his guy got a fair shot. LazOffTheBench 1 Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I'll ask for all of your collective forgiveness in advance for invoking PUke, but in many respects, Bo always reminded me of Gene Keady. For most of his years Keady rarely signed the big names but for the most part year in and year out he put competitive teams on the court. They may not have hung any banners in the pig sty, but for the most part were always competitive. Gene got a few 'stars', but that's not how he built his program and neither did Bo. I think Bo and Gene both were exceptionally good at recruiting players that fit their style, were fundamentally sound and were willing to play hardnosed team basketball. mamasa, GloryDays, Hoosier DaDa and 4 others 7 Quote
LazOffTheBench Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Class of '66, I agree completely. When I heard Bo had retired, I thought of Gene Keady's retirement. Their teams, style of coaching and play were similar. I have a lot of respect for both of them. thebigweave, mamasa, Class of '66 Old Fart and 1 other 4 Quote

Yes he had higher recruits, but the players bought into his system. Class of '66 Old Fart and LazOffTheBench 2 Quote
Scooter D Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Great coach...a blow to the Big 10. Loved his teams and the style of ball that they played. Always played tough defense and great team offense. Alford Bailey, GloryDays and LazOffTheBench 3 Quote

AKHoosier Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 The comments are pretty revealing, and don't surprise me in the least regarding Wisconsin. I heard some pretty bad things also regarding Bret Bielema too, so it doesn't surprise me to hear them about Alvarez too. WayneFleekHoosier 1 Quote
