Thoughts on WSU Coach Gregg Marshall

Recommended Posts

Marshall is honestly the last person on everyone's short list I would like to have. We will be doing this again in seven years.

My opinion is you are wrong. He has the style and knowledge to take this job and run with it. All he has done was win and win big at every stop. He reminds me of a better Bo Ryan before Bo took the Badgers job. He has proven time and time again he has the X's and Os to get the job done. Getting enough talent isn't an issue for any coach at IU. It's about getting a diciplined hard nosed team to get after it. Winning 17 championships in 17 years, finishing outside the top 3 in conference only 2 times is absolutely amazing. The only other mid major coach that could compete with that was Brad Stevens and the NBA came calling. Everyone and their brother wants Stevens, including myself. But if he says no, Gregg Marshall is a homerun.

If we're really keeping this baseball analogy going and actually being real without revising history Crean was a double when he was hired.  After sitting on second base for a couple years he got to third base from 2011-13 but could not make it home.  At this point if he is fired I would argue he got picked off while taking too big a lead at home.

I agree Crean was a double. So why do people want a new double, that sits at 2nd for a few years?

It's a 1 player deal. Gotta get a home run hitter.

Time will tell but I'd much rather have Gregg Marshall over Crean any day. But your right Crean is a double compared to Marshall bc Marshall is a home run. Stevens/Donovan are grand slams.

What the hell makes Marshall a homerun? 7 or 8 first game losses?

Get a grand slam, it's easy. apparently.

If I were to go so far as to call Marshall a homerun, I'd call it like a Jeffrey Maier situation.

I think it has more to do with his age than coaching ability.

How about 17 championships won in 17 years! Who cares what his NCAAS record was at Winthrop or WSU. Doing that gets you a coach like John Groce at Illinois. He probably wasn't favored to win any NCAA games until last years first round game. Even as a 1 seed they were under dogs to UK. Event bough his teams aren't as talented as the ones he comes up against, he still has been to a final four. What do you think he could do with the resources he would have available to him at IU? Give him a $750,000 recruiting budget and guarantee he won't go a year without a big or any shooters. He will do what he always has done and build a consistant winner. Finished outside the top 3 in his conference 2 times in 17 years. That is the track record we need. Oh and those 2 years were when he took over the WSU program and in year 2 he finished 5th. Again a homerun.

I don't think you understand the dynamics in play, and I'm not typing them out on my phone. Were just going to have to agree to disagree

It's unlikely that your understanding is anything other than self-confirmed like mine. I want a high quality replacement, not a little bit better...

Isn't Brad Stevens technically a successful Mid-major coach?

I know he's been in the NBA now too, but his major success has been with a mid major program.

He is. And he's never been my top choice.

I'm just not convinced he'll translate and be anything more than John Groce-type.

I don't count, but I don't want a successful mid-major coach, I want a successful High-major coach.

I agree with you for the most part, I just don't believe wait and see is an option
