Thoughts on WSU Coach Gregg Marshall

Recommended Posts

The part that's missing in this discussion is that I believe Marshall is getting paid at WSU fairly similar to what a coach at a middle-pack major conference school gets paid. I think the same is for Few at Gonzaga, Smart at VCU and probably Stevens when he was at Butler. So, these guys can take their time and wait for the perfect fit. They're getting taken care of at their mid-major schools, without the hassle.

It's not like the old days when a move from WSU to Illinois, for example, would also be a huge pay raise.

Marshall's salary became 1.75 million starting in April 2014.

So he really has no need to leave WSU until the exact situation he wants comes along. There's no reason for him to go to a Minnesota or Clemson or Alabama. WSU pays him well, has invested in basketball and he can compete for conference titles every year. It's the same for Shaka and was the same for Stevens.

Those guys don't need to jump to the first high-major program that shows interest in them, they can be very selective.

Yeah. I about face palmed when I remembered we're paying Crean double that.

im hoping you just worded that poorly because if that really is his thought then I'm not sure I would want a coach that would want something handed to him on a silver platter. I would thank that coaches would take great pride in building a program up

It's reported he wants a job he can be on equal footing and not at a program like Rutgers, Washington St., pick a historical cellar dweller who he wouldn't be able to compete in the conference.
Schools like Texas or Indiana are not at the top winning at a high level, but they can. They have facilities and resources that he isn't put at an instant disadvantage. That's what I was saying. There are career killer jobs and guys should shy away from those.

Along with the first or second round losses in the NCAA tournament most years?

I'll pass on the first weekend losses.  lol I'll take Izzo in that area.  I believe it takes a consistently winning in your conference and then building your tourney resume.  Bo is also starting to get more talented recruits (see: Dekker, Hayes) and will have more success in the tourney.  I'll take his FF though.

He's from SC and I saw where his mom said she had hoped he would come back to the south. If we do not get him, I would love to see him at South Carolina although its rumored he turned it down when Frank Martin was hired. I really think he would do well anywhere he went and esp at Indiana. I love to watch how hard his teams play and by comparison striking watching a Crean coached team. No wonder Creans teams fade at the end; you can't start coaching tenacity during the last moknth of playing and expect it to happen.

I don't think they look alike or even act alike. At halftime Marshall didn't talk in platitudes, he actually said where they needed to be better and what players where struggling. He wasn't pacing the sidelines and was cool calm and collected, his team reflected that.

Don't look alike?? Marshall defiantly looks like Creans older brother. It would be very weird.

No, from looking at his career, I see a lot of similarities to Crean. His off-court persona/quirks, his demeanor, and personality lead me to believe they'd be similar.

I find it highly entertaining that any Indiana fan could even fathom judging any prospective or current coach on his persona, quirks, demeanor, or anything else when Indiana had Bob Knight as its coach for 30 years. Too much speaking out of both sides of the mouth going on in this coaching conversation.

Just saying...

True, but as long as his teams win and play hard; I could even get over a 3 x 5 coaching card and and tanning bed lol. Just goes to show we are all about winning at Indiana. The right way of course.

Marshall may look like Crean but the on court product may as well be polar opposites.  Wichita State gives a crap about defense and actually tries, Indiana treats defense as that annoyance between offensive possessions.

Oh, look, we just gave up another wide open layup.

Yeah I know our defense sucks and I want us to excell in the tournament. I'm just not sold on Marshall.

I don't think he's a homerun, but I'm absolutely certain he's a better coach than Crean.  Granted that just means he's better than a coach that ranges from mediocre to bad on any given day.

Oh so we are not supposed to have learned anything from that experience.

He might be better. I think that where we are and what we have endured we deserve a home run hire or in basketball terms a slam dunk.
