Who are you hiring that was willing to come when the job was open a year ago?

That's the $100 Million question.

Just like coaches have to identify talent convince it to come the same applies to head coach searches.  It's also why Devries needn't worry about losing his job.

This never works in basketball anyways. It’s not football.

I’m not sure Devries Xs and Os are all that bad anyways. It mostly seems like implementation. He’s not a very good in-game coach. And that to me has always been as much of an art as it is science. Hard to get an assistant to shore that up.

Clearly you’re forgetting Armond Hill!

Iowa, UVa, Nova, Miami, Texas A&M, NC State, Texas all heading to the tourney this year while we watch again from home.
1st year coaches.

I guess all those places have been to more tourneys than us since 2016 so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.

But it was unreasonable to beat northwestern at home.  UVA hasn’t taken on titans like them you just don’t understand.  He needs 4 years.  Nobody else needs 4 years but for some reason you need 4 years here

I very strongly suspect that this came together two weeks ago because after 2/3 of this season, Dolson has recognized that the roster construction strategies by Devries are not working. And so he  took a proactive step to do something about it.

This was my reaction to the hire.  Great hire but why...it's obvious that they are trying to be proactive because maybe they see a deficiency in DeVries' talent evaluation, roster construction/management, ability to juggle NIL/GM/talent eval/recruiting.  I'm not sold on DeVries. I actually think this hire is something they put in place for a reason.  Possibly the 'GM' gets to help hire the next coach should this experiment with DeVries not work.  The L last night certainly did nothing to reassure me we won't be starting over in a few years.

It was obvious we swung for the fences and missed.  We had to take who would come.  We need an up and coming coach. Someone young and hungry that CAN coach, can make adjustments, and has the charisma to coach at IU.  DeVries will get a few more years.  But so far unimpressed from staff and roster construction to coaching.  His press conferences leave me feeling he is in over his head. I want to be wrong and see him succeed if for nothing else that we don't have to go through Brad watch again in 2 years but I suspect we will all be falling for the Brad talk once again when CDD gets the boot.

Unironically, there was a Brad who was the most likely next candidate. But I don’t think anybody on the board wants a conversation about how Brownell would do here.

The fact none of his players followed should have been a major red flag

Not really. Kory Barnett took the HC job at Oral Roberts, Tom Ostrom had previously coached here with Archie and had been fired, and Chester Frazier was never going to coach at Indiana. The only miss from the West Virginia team that IU could have used was Hansberry, but that guy was attached to Frazier at the hip who came with him from Illinois.

At this point, I'm extremely apathetic about the basketball team.

I don't know the schedule and don't really care to look. I saw on here yesterday that there way a game against NW then got off the site and completely forgot about it until I checked the site today.

I see that we lost at home to a bad NW team, hurting the chances of making the NCAAT. I only feel mild disappointment because this has become what I expect of the men's basketball team these days. A decade of usually being a bubble team or worse, usually ending up on the wrong side of the bubble. A far cry of being disappointed by a season that ends with the team getting a 6 seed.

Maybe CDD will figure it out and turn it around. I'm leaning towards he won't but there is a chance. I hope he does. If not, this thread will probably overtake the Fire Woodson and possibly the College Bball threads in number of posts by the time he's fired in 2-3 years and yet another coaching search ensues which will probably result in another meh hire.

I'll continue to somewhat keep track of how their doing but not really caring too much when they lose. At least there are still other teams worth following more closely at IU: football, swimming, and soccer.

Edit: why does the title of this thread say both how he's "doing so far" and "TBD"?  Those are contradictory.

It started as a fire thread and it’s been amended at least twice. It’s unrecognizable now.

  • LIHoosier changed the title to How is Darian DeVries Doing So Far?

The fact that he was hired 11 months ago and I still can’t pronounce his name is a major red flag.

Not only do I not think this hire will work out, but I think we’ll forget this guy was ever our coach within two years of him leaving. This whole program currently feels like a screensaver, waiting for the next and more serious hire to come along.

just wait for the next coach.  Sounds like a good plan.  At least it will mean this board is rolling and must read

Our defensive efficiency falling off a cliff the past month has to be considered a pretty big red flag.

He had a top 15 defense last year at West Virginia.  Wild it’s falling to the 60s once he becomes IUs coach

I’m telling ya DDV is not getting 4 years just because if the writing is on the wall. It’s a different world now. He needs to make major strides next year. Compared to football basketball is an easy fix.

I’ve been screaming for IU to fire coaches early, or opportunistically, since Davis. Never happens. I’d count on 4 years unless something crazy happens
