IUBB Shot Chart Thread

In an effort to provide joy and optimism, win or lose, I present the IUBB shot chart thread! Let's start with a baseline of the past; 

The last game of the Woodson era; a 72-59 loss to Oregon in the B1G tournament:

 

 

AND NOW.... the first game of the Devries era, a 98-51 win over Alabama A&M:

 

 

My, how things have changed.

And neither is an outlier.  I'll bet you could overlay the Woody era shot charts and they'd all look about the same.  And going forward, I'll bet the DDV era shot charts will look about the same.

What was especially annoying about woodys shot charts is we weren’t even good at the shots we shouldn’t have been shooting. 
 

The whole “well it went in” mantra didn’t even apply

Would it be reasonable to say that after just one game (against Alabama A&M) that I like this team more than any IU team in the last 9 seasons?

It’s funny/sad people gave Woody the mantra that he ran 80’s NBA ball with personnel and emphasis.

 

Then, He and his Twitter army team ran counter to that notion for an off-season or 2 only to be proven that these claims were 100% correct all along.

 

Everyone around the program not directly within the program discussed this for 2 years hoping and praying for a change.

 

And we got, “Nah, I know better”.

In retrospect, you know what I think it boiled down to? Woody associated the IU job with his success and memories at IU. That was foreseeable human nature.

When Woody was at IU, he was a prolific scorer without a three point line and he didn't play in the post; he was incredibly good in the mid-range. He knew what modern ball was like, but when a kid stop and popped for a guarded 12 foot jumper he couldn't help but think "That's a shot that Mike Woodson took and regularly made." And so he didn't put a stop to that crap.

I even think he ran counter to analytics to prove his point.  However TJD was Him. Go to him early and often and reap rewards.  Imagine Wilkerson and DeVries surrounding TJD on the kick outs…..

With another great point made- that a low post scorer can thrive in this offense.

Space aplenty. 5 out that morphs in and out of 4-1.  The 4 needs to have shooting.  More or less similar to Crean’s 4-1 with Zeller.

There was a PnR play at the top of the floor early in the 2nd half the other night with Conorway and Bailey. It was perfect, Bailey rolled and got a wide open dunk.  

The floor was spaced with DeVries and Wilkerson on opposite wings and Enright spread out too. 

All I could think about was that Woodson would have run that PnR with non-shooters on the wing and most egregiously another big sitting on the opposite block completely clogging the lane. Probably would have resulted in Xavier Johnson or Myles Rice forcing a pass in traffic and a turnover.

TJD in this offense gives you the playmaking Devries sees in a skilled big like Reed Bailey, PLUS elite level rebounding and shot blocking. God I hope we get someone like TJD again.

Less shots from the right wing last night -- that's generally the most efficient outside shot, compare the 11/12 game. Would bet on seeing more right wing shots next game.

The one midrange was an offensive rebound by DeVries and then he  did a  Floater push shot.

2-13 from 3-point range won't win you a semi-state.
