Curry Hicks Sage hinted at Stevens backing out on Sunday night

If he really did back out again, it just further confirms my conspiratorial belief that IU basketball is a staged reality TV show where we can't ever become elite again because it would end the show.

Exactly!

I’m starting a new thread because (understandably) a lot of posters just want to look forward. But I think this info is useful for contextualizing what @Chris007 and @BehindTheBench and @GP711 were passing along.

On Monday night, March 17, a full day before the DeVries news leaked, Curry Hicks Sage on his influential national podcast said that IU seemed out on McCollum and that it was between DeVries and “someone really ******* big.” Curry also said he meant someone like Stevens, even if he didn’t know who exactly it was.

This podcast has the best info of anyone—even better than Trilly. I think it’s easy to connect the dots here and say that our insiders had heard for weeks that Stevens was in serious talks and that he ultimately declined this weekend. Dolson didn’t want to get caught flat footed again so he had also been working for weeks on backups, including DeVries. Once Stevens was out, Dolson pivoted.

There’s obviously a game of telephone between the donors here, which may explain why @BehindTheBench heard that Stevens said yes while @Chris007 heard only that Stevens had not said no.

Also, I still have a lot of questions, mostly involving why exactly Stevens said no a second time. My sense was always that Chris was pretty optimistic based on his info—the Center Grove house, for instance—but that he tried to keep his optimism in check so as not to repeat the heartbreak of the last search. He and most of the other insiders were clearly trying to be level headed, and I appreciate them doing that.

I understand why some other posters still feel misled about Stevens, but the Curry Hicks Sage podcast suggests this was all real. Again, I have no idea why Stevens said no. I am curious to hear any other details people want to share—not just on Stevens but also on whether McCollum was actually Dolson’s choice over DeVries, as Chris hinted. I can’t be the only who hopes that @JerryYeagley23 shares more intel at some point too.

I’m excited for the new coach, but I’m also curious if we can get any closure on our shared month of insanity. And I wanted to point to the podcast that backed up our insiders.

:)

go Hoosiers!

Don’t care about what may/ may not have happened.

Will never again type the word Drock.

Only forward looking and the future looks promising.

If the fanbase needs to reunite, a first step would be for this forum to stop the pissing on each other.

We have a new head coach who appears to be all in.

As I said previously.

I would hope that you would support who we are, not who we are not.

Whatever happened, we can’t change. Why is there this animosity when we finally have a coach who is all about coaching/building a culture/winning?

Also not a fan of typing “Drock” or variations of it. I also will not type it again. I hope I’m typing “CDD” for the next 15 years.

That’s all I gots.

It will be tomorrow morning but I’ll get it to you. I’m not sure if Jerry will be able to share everything or not but it would blow your mind.

Send to me too please?

DeVries is all in.  He's a hell of a coach. In the end, that's what I care about the most.

Going to enjoy the dance with the gorgeous prom date you have and not the anyone that said no.

This is it for me - don't get wrong I enjoyed the search and loved that people shared what they could but ultimately there's something to be said about hungry and having something to prove. As we've all mentioned during this search there seemed to be high floor- low ceiling guys and low floor-high ceiling guys - I love us taking the latter.

So if otz and Drew were not on the list and the list became small, where does the mention of mark few come into play.

Was it just few maybe trying to get bigger NIL from Gonzaga or was there genuine interest?

I didn't figure pearl would want to come and I pretty much crossed off dusty in my mind after he took the Michigan gig.

I think Few mentioned last fall he might be interested but after talking to him we found out we had better options. No guarantee he was going to leave.

I do wonder how many coaches we got a raise or bigger NiL. :)

I’m just glad we may be entering an era not marked by arrogance without accomplishment.  Hopefully that’s true for fans as well

I believe all of this. What I don't understand is the absolute certainty on everyone's part that Brad Stevens would have guaranteed wins. He hasn't coached anybody for four years and hasn't coached in college in over a decade. College basketball is not even the same sport as it was when Brad Stevens was winning at Butler with Shelvin Mack and Gordon Hayword. It's been so long that Hayword, his best player, just retired after a 14-year NBA career.

We have one insider. His name is Ron Mexico. Period!

I think you guys just like saying the name, Ron Mexico haha

Someone even referred to me as Mr. Mexico earlier today.  Never in a million years did I think I would garner that level of respect.

Can someone refresh my memory as to why we landed Carlyle and not Conwell?
