Curry Hicks Sage hinted at Stevens backing out on Sunday night

He said no weeks ago, and he didn’t waver on that. Realize you’re not saying otherwise, but he never put himself in play. Further, we went to Dusty’s “representative” and got the same answer. Manual was already ahead of us and talking about a new deal. DDV and his reps did something most other coaches wouldn’t do.

What did DDV and his reps do?

They engaged in active discussions while he was still coaching WVU. It was several people representing IU and DD’s reps, but he had to have been involved in some way. The unusual aspect was that DD’s people made it clear they were quite willing to talk specifics early on, rather than deferring conversations until the season ended.

Can you confirm if we ever got anywhere with any other Big 12 coaches or were they firm no's from the ask?

The national podcast vindicated nothing.

“Vindicated” is such a weird word, like there are winners and losers here. This is not Mad Max. It’s a message board.

All the podcast did was say it was DeVries before anyone else had that, suggesting Curry Hicks had a great source. But that source also suggested “someone really ******* big”—and Curry Hicks was careful to say it was the level of Stevens without saying it was or was not Stevens—was in play as late as Sunday.

So people saying Chris and the others hallucinated the Brad to IU possibilities—I just don’t think they did. Some version of “Brad listened and considered but ultimately said no again” was true. And the podcast offers some national context that corroborates what they were hearing.

People want to pick fights and accuse and blame and that’s just so childish. Even Curry Hicks doesn’t know what really happened. Dolson and Whitten are probably the only ones who know the full story. But the podcast is more smoke that supports Chris et al, so I figured I’d share it

Apparently someone with money to throw around was indicating Stevens was a yes.  Those rumors got out to the interweb.  Thus, the disappointment by some.

Who is Manual?

I am glad you agree there was no vindication as suggested by others as you think such a word is inapplicable.

I appreciate you sharing. It seems to me like no one person has the full story, but bits and pieces. Reading what various insiders here and elsewhere have said can help build out the timeline and put together an (admittedly vague) understanding of what happened behind the scenes. It's still unclear if Stevens was ever truly a "yes," to me it seems like there was a different "big fish" potentially on the hook that didn't pan out. I've seen Jay Wright mentioned, but I don't know.

Regardless, what does seem pretty clear is that Indiana was in talks with DeVries for several weeks, and he had a high degree of interest in the job. I'd much rather have a guy that really wants to be here than a guy that has to be begged to take the job.

Let's get to work.

Edit: According to Kathy, Stevens was never a yes. Which wouldn't surprise me at all. But someone was out there pushing the rumor that Stevens was coming, and I think that's what many of our insiders were hearing.

You don't have to repeat yourself.  Nobody cares at this point.

I appreciate her weighing in, people repeat themselves here all the time, especially over the last 2 months.

Sharing info on the behind the scenes happenings regarding Stevens is what this thread is for and discussing whether he indeed backed out on Sunday or just said no for the final time.

I can also corroborate that he was never a yes - 8bucks knows where that confirmation came from and I think he would agree that person would know.
