Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Recommended Posts

McCollum may be a better X's and O's coach than DeVries but he's still a very solid coach. And winning at a higher level program like Indiana there are other aspects such as recruiting the right level of talent. And the style of play can affect the level of recruits you get. I was definitely for McCollum but I had legitimate concerns about that. I feel comfortable at this point that DeVries may be a better fit. But time will tell

I haven’t looked at this thread for over 24 hours and I’m sure it has already been discussed. Them WVU fans are fing butthurt.

They think coach DD and Tucker ran as good as grift on WVU as Woody and Buckner did on IU. I went down a wormhole on a Reels comment section showing DD’s announcement presser. If half of what they say is true we got ourselves a slimy coach…and they say IU fans are crazy.

I view it this way man.  If I was a coach and my son or any kid played 8 games due to an injury and was out an extended time……I would not let them come back.  It does that kid a disservice.  XJ did it to us one year remember? **** happens.

Just my opinion — I don’t think Scott and Pam would bring in someone unsuitably slimey.  I’m not worried about some upset WVU fans venting.

Frankly, CBB is a nasty zero sum competition amongst schools, and I want a coach with a ruthless streak.  Otherwise they will get beat up by the competition.

Finally!!  a coach willing to do whatever it takes to be successful at Indiana!

I know we’re all optimistic for the future of the program but a top assistant leaving bama for the same role at IU seems like a pretty big risk at the moment.

I didn't say it was happening, I said that's where the rumbles and noise is coming from and Murphy gets paid the most money regardless because it's both programs that swing bags of cash around like monopoly money in basketball.

So he might get more money from Bama out of this, he might get nothing and say no, he might come here, who knows?

Gotcha. Our fanbase seems very concerned with coaches being calm and reserved on the sidelines. Strikes me as odd. Lol

I can remember people getting mad that Crean was too much of a "clapper". I was at a home game during Archie's first year. He had a meltdown on the sidelines and the crowd actually started clapping. It was a bit odd, but I get the sentiment that some fans wanted someone who coaches with passion

It's not a big deal, but I do prefer calm coaches on the sideline, I think that is generally good for the team.

After Reggie's 1998 game 4 winner vs. the Bulls, Larry had my ideal coach reaction.  Huge shot, no reaction -- game wasn't over and he knew MJ had a little bit of time left (and Mike nearly made the shot).

Why would we assume MCollum is a better X's and O's coach that DeVries? From all accounts, DeVries is an excellent X's and O's coach. BTW - I strongly agree, that DeVries is the better fit.

I really think that ship has sailed.

Yep, he will keep his commitment, but wouldn't be shocked if he is still in college and IU looks to be new and approved he thinks about coming home next year.  If it wasn't for Woody, he would be here.

Idk, but I want the coach who doesn’t need time to think about it. By the looks of it, DD touched down in Bloomington before the ink was even dry.

There's a lot to be said about a coach that really wants the job.  I recall Sampson had told people he'd choke the sh*t out the IU job (presumably in a positive way, lol).  Archie is said to have taken it only because it was a great opportunity and it was time to take a step up.  Woodson wanted it but wasn't capable of or willing to put in maximum effort.

Let alone his ranting on the sidelines. He makes Tom Crean look like Bob Ross. For @Home Jersey that means calm and serene

If he's animated on the sideline, maybe a good fit for Iowa?

I think that sentiment comes from our fan's fond memories of Knight's teams and his extremely animated demeaner.  They associate that passion with a successful coach and program.

On the other hand, Cignetti has made his thoughts very clear about his distaste for coaches showing emotion during a game.  He's basically a statue on the sidelines... how's that been working out for us?

Watching Drake yesterday was a pleasure. I love watching teams that give total effort.plus they are the definition of team ball. McCallom would’ve been a terrific hire. DeVries will probably be able to do ok it’s going to help having his son coming in . We will see down the road which coach is more successful. My bet is McCallom is a better Xs and Os coach and DeVries is a better at recruiting. I hope DeVries is very successful at IU. He looks better than the last couple of hires pretty low bar. I at least feel there is a chance for greatness.

Is Dolson impatient? Or did he believe both were equally strong candidates?

I don't have the inside info to answer that one... but IMO, both DeVries and McCollum were great options, and I saw them pretty much equally qualified and equally exciting hires... and the fact that DeVries was available right now (with the portal opening looming) and McCollum was still playing and (rightly) focused on his team, DeVries said "yes" first...

To be fair, McCollum's team was still playing and DeVries' team's season had ended.
