In 1:53 we would have just had to have recovered the onside kick, go on a scoring drive and get a 2 point conversion, then recover another onside kick and go on another scoring drive with another 2 point conversion to tie the game.

Risk to reward. You cannot afford to give up any more points. The risk, to me, was not worth the possible reward. Just a poor decision IMO.
