Solid game.  Lots of good.  Some bad.  We did let them hang around which if a few things went their way we'd be looking at a L or a 2-4 point victory.  While we are definetly improved against unranked type team, I have two concerns:  1) our tendancy to "play down" to our competition, at least for a half or so, and 2) how we are going to match the intensity of the top teams.  Last year we go smoked by Uconn and Auburn; Kansas was close.  Same as year before.  Other than Atlantis, we have no marquee non-conference match ups.  We may not know how we stack up for some time.

So now a 16 point victory is a ‘few things’ from being a 2-4 point or a loss?

Yeah because a bunch of those points came in the last 1:30 mins of the game.  It was an 8 point game at with 1:19 left.  A turnover and Good free throw shooting (go figure) sealed it.  Point being it was a closer game than the final score indicated.

Yet an 8 point lead with less than 1:30 left is a comfortable lead that would take a pretty bad collapse to lose the game. Instead, IU did what they were supposed to do which is make defensive stops and hit FT.

She’d be willing to take a charge from him.

I don't want have to see Dr. Rink or Tim Garl for a concussion. Would need to have one world class of an apology.

Then be consistent.

Down the road if we lose by 16 and are down 8 with 1:30 to go I fully expect you to recognize that the game was closer than the final score indicated.

For me? I’m more inclined to believe that a 16 point win over a top 75 team is pretty damn solid, including if we were up less with 1:30 to go.

IU doubled SC's rebounds in the first half.  Scored 14 points in a row.  Hit 3's and frees.  Miles Rice got IU going early...a tip of the ole toupee to him.

SC, on the other hand, had their leading scorer knocked out early due to foul trouble.

Once IU closed out their 3's and paid attention, it was IU's game.  You could tell by Coach Woody's stare whether they were doing well.   Heh.../s

IU controlled the game when Ballo looked serious and Mgbako was flying.  5 guys in double figures...and our defense is lots better when they want to be.  I love good guards and IU has them...at long last.

And who could not love Carlyle's half-court Alley-Oops-a-three!

And they wanted to be defending when it counted.

Beat the spread by 10 points.

Our ball movement was good today; we had several 3 looks and Goode has to hit those. Our guard play much better; a returning starter I don’t believe got any smell. Carlyle is more athletic than I thought and with more experience can be really good. Ballo accepts his role as defender and rebounder mostly and that’s good to see. I think Hattie should be getting more minutes early as we may need him later in the Big. Nice game today.

I disagree about Hattie. Initially, I thought he would get more minutes after the UT scrimmage. However, since then I have changed my mind. When he’s in, our defense suffers mainly due to positioning and lack of rim protection while he’s in. And offense doesn’t seem nearly as efficient when he’s in.

I mean absolute no disrespect towards the kid, I’m sure he’s a great kid. But solid practice player . The only thing I believe he does well at is. Catching ball elbow extended, and making a move to go score at the basket with pivot moves, positioning, ball fakes, etc.

Who says it wasn't "solid" win over a "top 75" (LOL).  And yes we closed out the game like we should.  But we basically beat a non-tourney team.  That's great and you have to do that a bunch of times to get to 20+ wins.  But the men separate from the boys playing the top teams.  That has been our Achilles heal the past two years.  My concern is matching up against them.

It's one game in a three-game season, I am neither positive or negative.  I am wait and see.

I said “Top 75” because SCar is KenPom #60.

Unsure why that is funny or as you inferred, overstated the caliber of competition.

SC was a 6 seed in the NCAAT last year.  Their coach is the SEC COTY.  They lost 2 very good players.  Reloaded.  And may be a tourney team.  Watch them get over 20 wins and get an invite...maybe.

We beat a possible tourney team.  The only reason they hung somewhat with IU is they started hitting 3s.  Well so did we.  And our defense and offense suffered somewhat when two guards were substituted or Mgbako was out, once at the same time as Ballo.

Oh, no, they are not perfect and stomping all comers 3 games into the new season.  Shocked, not shocked.  Happy, quite happy.

Assembly Call

Interesting. I feel like I saw way more than 12 post entries (completed or attempted). With that said I also see more ball screens to start possessions and the small ball lineups look to have a four out look that was rarer in the past.

Tough to say with only one real game under our belt but I don’t see us straying from our old offense as much as some. For example, we still only had 17 attempts from 3, which is closer to our nearly last place average last year than an average D1 team. Seemed like a lot of the difference yesterday was how much we got out in transition. That’s a good thing too, though.

I agree.  But now that we are hitting 3s...seems that opens the door for more of that kind.  And the pressure definitely was off of the inside game because the other 3 were picking up the scoring.  Very cool...a lot of opportunities available.  A lot more.

Agree on the number of outside shot attempts that’s been my big gripe from day 1, but — there are several different looks to our O, Princeton offense, wing-out breaks in transition, less post low post touches with big catching in high post / perimeter, more 1 big units.
Do want to see more outside shooting but some real positives in the quality of the shot attempts, we hit at like 47% in that game and it looks like Bako has the green light - as he absolutely should. Hope that continues and grows

No. I think the opposite actually. Offense is generating looks, multiple guys are making, Goode simply can’t get his shot to fall. Actually don’t agree with 99.9% of the things you spout but to each their own.

I’m glad you feel that way, at least we both know where each other stands because I definitely feel that exactly about you!  FYI, I was referring to Goode finding his water level, not the other 3.
