How many total minutes are available in a game? 200 .... some are not going to play as much as they want. R.J. I am a little skeptical though. I am no expert, but what I've seen of Carlyle, he seems like he'll be erratic. Get you 26pts on 5-8 3p shooting one night, but then 7pts on 0-4 3p with 4 TO's the next. Hope I'm wrong, but was hoping for a starting SG that is (already) a very good 3p shooter and I am not convinced Carlyle will develop into that guy. Hope he proves me wrong, since all indications are he is being installed as the starting SG next year. Just saying...that's 5/12 for 41.7%. ;) str8baller, CSP, thebigweave and 5 others 4 4 Quote
IUrocker Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Definitely interested in how the Connor Essegian visit goes today. If he’s 100% healthy from his back issues like I’ve seen he is, I think he could be a more reliable shot maker than Miller Kopp was for us. I feel like Kopp wasn’t as deadly as I thought he’d be, although I wish he had gotten more attempts. Thing is, Kopp probably ended up being a better defender than Connor could be. No reason why he can’t improve there though. Kopp improved his defense while here, so Connor could do the same if he puts in the work. Quote

We needed a scorer more than JUST a shooter. I preferred Carlyle at the 2, more so than any other option we have seen thus far. His catch and shoot #s, spot-up #s were as good as any FR in a Power 5 conference. 8bucks and moyemayhem 2 Quote

In that situation you hope to go to your bench to bring in a guy who at the very least doesn't hurt you. Maybe Cupps gives you minutes that night. Maybe Newton. Maybe a guy like Essegian. Galloway is still on the team and although I think I prefer him at SF he can play the 2G no problem. With just the 4 guys Woodson is supposed to be adding already, there really should be no excuses. If you add Carlyle, you have enough to go out and win a bunch of games. If you can't or don't, you aren't the guy. IH8PU, thebigweave and Chris007 3 Quote

Since they were the last two games of the year, I didn’t break it out that way. For whatever reason he struggled in Nov going 2/18 that month. After that he shot .356 from 3 on exactly 5 atts a game. Barring injury or some weird regression he’s going to be a good to great 3 point shooter for us next year. I’d argue Cupps will probably be capable of hitting 35%+ on catch and shoot 3’s. Galloway may bump back up if he doesn’t have to do so much. So if just one of Carlyle or Rice make a jump to a 35% or better 3pt shooter, we should be able to roll out some lineups that can shoot the 3. I wouldn’t expect Cupps or Leal to see many minutes but nonetheless they provide a little flexibility in that regard. The question then becomes, will we? We’d need to shoot about 7 more 3s a game to get to the median Div 1 team this year. One of the reasons I like Conwell is that because he’s a very willing shooter (and capable maker!) and would have no problems finding 3’s to take even in Woodys offense. But even without him we should have enough shooting to justify taking a bunch more 3s CSP and thebigweave 2 Quote

Bowhunter Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 I think our style of play does hurt us recruiting elite level guards who can shoot. That’s why we probably end up with a Conner Essesian type player who is an elite level shooter but not an elite level guard. Quote

Popular Post Chris007 Posted April 17, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 17, 2024 Sounds like Connor is down to IU and Michigan. Maryland and South Carolina both got guards so he's out with them. He grew up a Michigan fan and likes their system better, but our money seems to be a little higher. I don't think he will commit today but I would love to be surprised. go iu bb, IUrocker, Artie86 and 7 others 9 1 Quote

Yeah doesn’t surprise me that he’s down to IU and Michigan. I knew he and his family grew up big Michigan fans. I’m sure they’d think it’d be really cool for him to play there. Obviously playing at a place like IU is no slouch either obviously, so in this case hopefully money does talk. I’m bias on him though since we went to the same high school. My sister in law was his teacher in a couple classes too, so we all think it’d be cool for him to be at IU. Chris007 1 Quote

AH1971 Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 1 hour ago, RaceToTheTop said: Let's say that they both shoot 35% from three next year -- pretty realistic expectation for the jump from freshman to sophomore year (for an IU comparison, C.J. Gunn and Tamar Bates certainly had holes in their game and neither shot the ball well as all as freshman, but they were at 34 and 37% as sophomores). Rice and Carlyle as 35% shooters from deep are a couple of pretty effective three level scorers. That's my assessment as well. I think both Carlyle and Rice will be ~35% on 5-6 attempts a game which translates to 1.5-2 makes a game and then Mgbako I think will be ~37% on 7-8 attempts which again translates to 2.75-3 makes a game. On the low end that comes out to just under 200 made 3's. That alone eclipses last years total of 166 made 3's just from 3 players. Those guys are going to get a ton of looks next year with Reneau and Ballo who are almost automatic under the rim. If Rice and Carlyle can hit open 3's next year (something our back court couldn't do at all last season) this will be a very tough offense to stop. Opposing defenders aren't going to sag off of guys like Rice or Carlyle, they'll get run out of the gym if they do. Jeff Flabjohns 1 Quote
