This Walker thing is actually gonna happen.

Then we will use the excuse we have Gallo, Cupps, Walker, so what difference making PG would want to compete with that.  Lol

Pain

Woody gets a Rolls Royce budget and shops for Fords.

He has to save all the money for the 4 power forwards that he is waiting to hit the portal to sign

In all seriousness, I don’t agree with you on Walker as a player, but I 100% agree on the concern of the roster building. I would feel much better about it if Cupps wasn’t on the roster tbh

Walker will only be a bad pickup if we fail to get someone markedly better.

The guards from Stanford and/or Belmont would be good additions. Strike out on those and then maybe Dolson's finger gets a little closer to that eject button.

If we cobble together a woefully shorthanded roster for next year at least we can have some confidence that we get to partake in a legit coaching search thread at years end.

Maybe Leland Walker ends up with an offer and maybe he doesn't.  Portal's only been officially open 4 days and there will be a whole lot of additional names in the portal by this time next week.  I'd be far more concerned if we'd already signed him up without waiting to see what the rest of the menu looks like.

I think Walker would be a perfect piece.

-multiple years of eligibility remaining

-strong proven skills (not an athlete we are hoping can turn into a basketball player)

-Indiana kid who will be willing to come off the bench

-NIL discount for being so close to his home. We will need to budget wisely to go big $ on our top targets.

Why do you think he would be willing to come off the bench? Because he's from Indiana? Because he's moving from a mid-major? Neither one of those are indicators of whether he'd be willing to come off the bench or not.

undersized avg shooters from small programs are going to be on par with Cupps, Leal, etc....won't improve this team much if at all probably. But, hope I'm wrong.

Markquis Nowell says hi.  Can't paint every player with a broad brush.

And no, not saying that it is the norm or that Leland Walker fits the Nowell mold.

They actually are indicators.  Doesn't mean that he is looking to, but I'm not sure what you consider an indicator that he knows he would likely be coming off the bench if moving from a low major to a high major or moving to a school closer to home where he is going to have to compete are.

Yeah, I don't get the complaints.....if the staff wasn't expressing interest or getting visits from players, people would be complaining.  Now we have someone visiting which could be the first of maybe seven transfers we could sign and people are upset?  Even if he were to commit to IU, why would anyone think he's the only guard out of 7 open spots that would be brought in?

I would say strike out on them OR comparable guards and then there is concern.  There are going to be guys like them still to enter.

Wonder how Walker potentially impacts Cupps? I can't fathom IU would be bringing in Walker to start from day 1 and I'm not so sure you can play Walker (or Cupps) off the ball as part of your second unit. I think at this stage Walker is probably the better bet is as your 2nd PG, wondering if this would push out Cupps?

Or could be that the staff knows Cupps could be leaving.  Or could be that the staff is just exploring as many options as possible.  I know we need more players than we did at this time last year but it certainly seems like they are making contact with more players.

My portal wish list...

1) Point Guard. Throw $$$$$$$$ at them. Get the best one possible. Enough said.

2) Shooters, Shooters, and more shooters. Would be awesome to have multiple guys who shoot high volume 40% from 3.

3) Center. I personally would like to start Mgbako at the 4 and Malik at the 5. However, have a Center that can come off the bench and play 20-25 minutes a game. Mgbako/Malik at 4.. I'm okay with Mgako-Malik-Portal Center at the 3-4-5 at some times in the game.

4) Forward that can play the 3/4 spot off the bench. Maybe a good version on Anthony Walker?..not a jab at Anthony. He had some good moments this year.

Staff can't go into the next season with the same mentality they had going into this one. They gave Xavier, CJ, Kaleb, and Sparks way too much credit. If Galloway has to be our 6th man because we have two sharp shooting guards, fine. If Cupps/Newton/Leal barely play because of upgrades, fine. Make them all earn it.

Does any of this really matter with this coaching staff? Who knows.

Just a reminder we need SEVEN players. If Walker is okay being a bench player there is 0 reasoning we should be complaining. A junior productive-ish player on the bench is not bad. We’re going to get our studs likely when the tourney ends. Complaining about Walker is ridiculous.

Agree. If the dude says I want guaranteed starter minutes, then move on. But if he’s willing to compete for PT, great.

I personally would like to see Cupps play off the ball more. He’s not a creator with the ball but I think he can grow into a spot up shooter, or more into a combo guard roll like Jordy was.
