You wanted Woodson to have a 4th year when most of us wanted him gone to get Dusty!  But I digress...You can play this same album over and over.

Who cares? Woodson deserved a 4th year to right the ship after taking IU to the tournament back to back years. Even in hindsight I still hold that opinion. I really don’t care if you agree with me or not. My opinion had zero bearing on any of the outcomes that followed. Flattered you hold me in such high regard. Thanks?

There’s no album to play over. Dusty is at Michigan and not at IU. Get over yourself. Dusty May had the chance to take his “dream job” last year yet decided to sign an extension instead with Michigan. It is what it is.

Deserve has nothing to do with it when there is a clear upgrade available.

You're welcome!  You were probably the only guy on this site that was willing to die on that hill! Other than @steubenhoosier!  He gave up!  You are still here...so congrats!

You posted “when” not “if” he craps out; hence me reading that way. If that’s not what you conclude? My bad.

Anyway, here’s one Indianapolis HS head coach’s take; not some wanna be sportscaster or click-baiter. Tony Adranga is pretty good at breaking down film; this is his year in review, warts and all. He cites the terrible roster build as we all do, but he also talks scheme, starting at the 4min, 45 sec mark:

So there ya go! And it’s not the only time I’ve seen this; it’s the first thing I found for you.

Now, find a similar or higher level coach that has criticized Devries’ schemes and adjustments.

Adragna’s great, and a straight shooter. That’s a balanced assessment. I have the same concerns about lack of depth of roster continuity, but the combination of at least Sisley and the pretty decent incoming frosh group should help with growing the culture and institutional knowledge of schemes, sets, style, expectations.
And absolutely need to balance the level of incoming talent in the portal with remaining eligibility, class depth. Build right and we should be good for the tourney next season and continuing to get better. Coaching is there, and Carr’s hire and it’s timing should pay big dividends

I didn't want the 4th year, but the 4th year wasn't unreasonable given the success with TJD.

It would have been preposterous given the circumstances. But because Woodson got all in the feelings of a bunch of old dudes he had to go.

We shall see...I'm not off the DDV wagon yet, but I think this upcoming season is make or break!

Yeah I’m there with you. But I don’t think he is out after 2 years regardless. I think Dolson wants to build through the high school ranks and will give him 3 years regardless of next years results. But the seat will be scratching hot if they don’t make the dance. So in Ryan Carr I trust. It’s a crucial portal season.

Fwiw, I deleted some unnecessarily combative posts.

Yes, I’m familiar with Tony from social media and knew what you were referring to as I listened to that podcast too. None of these podcasters that want to maintain good relationships are going to publicly criticize a coach in his first year. And I've seen some of Tony’s breakdowns and think he does a nice job. He goes out of his way here to lay blame entirely on roster construction here as a way of purposely not publicly criticizing another working coach, and in this case one who is at the flagship university of the state he coaches in. I can go back and find his tweets saying nice things about Woodson early on too, but what would that prove?

If you think Devries did a good job coaching last year, fine by me. You’ve stated it several times. I don’t think any team that lays down and dies down the stretch with a tourney berth on the line, like IU did, received consistently good coaching.  I’m hopeful for Carr and the new roster. I’m also hopeful for a Devries learning curve because I don’t think even with an improved roster he’s going to see a second contract if he doesn’t address some things besides roster construction.

Curious.  What are those coaching things he needs to address?

He never got a good handle on this squad. So I’d start with team management: i.e. what you do with the roster after you’ve selected the players.  I’ve said it before, but we’re not privy to practices where the real work is done, so I like to give a lot of latitude to coaching decisions based on practice. But I have no idea how you could practice all summer and fall and come out with a lineup that has Reed Bailey starting over Sam Alexis. To CDD’s credit he fixed it.

Something similar happened at the PG spot. Conerway was having trouble integrating into the team offense and it wasn’t until he went out with injury that the team started to gel. That one would’ve been less obvious from practice and again to CDD’s once he saw it he tried to fix it by more or less just banishing Conerway to the end of the bench when he came back.

Obviously dropping the ball on those two spots from a roster construction standpoint cost us a lot. But not figuring them out earlier from a team management perspective likely cost us just enough to miss the tourney.

I agree that at times we got glimpses of a what the offense could look like at its best and it was exciting. But too often it didn’t hold through first contact with opposing coaches defensive schemes. Some people on here got mad at me when I criticized the early in the shot clock, long distance 3s. I said the players didn’t trust the offense and were panicking. A few games later in a post game press conference, Devries admitted he needed to clean that up and referred to it as “nervous” shot making, or something.  Our metrics kinda pointed to that too as they just sank on both sides of the ball as the season wore on.

I don’t know what happened to the team down the stretch but there were some embarrassing performances. You can say that you shouldn’t have to coach efforts at this level, but it’s still in the job description. What separates Devries last game of the season from Woodys the year before? Bubble team. Chance to earn your way with a win or two against mediocre opponents in the BTT. Come out and get your butts kicked looking like you’d rather be anywhere else than playing basketball in an IU jersey.

I could go on… but I’m on my phone. The biggest takeaway should be that all the stuff is normal fixable basketball stuff. It’s not Woody-like structural stuff (eg deploying a defense that doesn’t guard the 3) that’s just never going to work at the B1G level.

I was doing some research on Fru and I think he will be a good addition. I don’t think the price is what is being rumored though. It will be lower.

I don’t want a high usage big because I still want a guard oriented team. But give me a guy with some size and length to rebound, play defense, and score off of putbacks/dunks.

I am looking forward to the recruiting news over the next month.  I am also looking forward to the upcoming basketball season.  I have every reason to envision that IU will be in the upper 1/3 of the B1G and in the top 25 seeding for the NCAAT.  And that should just be the start of a great set of seasons.  Start making that banner.

Give me an I. Thomas or Mighty Quinn clone at PG and I might just crack a smile.

Burton, vaaks, Harleson, insert player here(I’d love for this spot to be singleton but I’ve seen he wants to play in a different conference), fru would be a very much upgraded starting 5. Fill in the rest with shooters and athletes

and this can all change a lot with the next 2 weeks of being able to join the portal haha

This would be a massive talent upgrade that’s for sure. It may be hard to convince Burton, Vaaks, and Haralson that they’d all get the ball enough though
